🍂 October Practices for a Gentle Autumn

As Canadian Thanksgiving approaches, it’s a wonderful time to pause and reflect on what we are grateful for – and to appreciate the small things that bring warmth and meaning into our lives.

Autumn brings change: shorter days, cooler mornings, and a different rhythm. Sometimes our mood changes with the season too. We may feel less energetic, more nostalgic, or simply need quieter space and rest.

Here are a few gentle practices to support yourself this October:

🍁 Slow down.

Give yourself permission to do things a little more slowly. Not every day needs to be productive.

☕ Create a small autumn ritual.

A warm drink, a candle, a favorite blanket, or a walk among the trees – simple rituals can bring comfort and a sense of stability.

🌿 Reconnect with nature.

Even a 15-minute walk outside can help you reconnect with your body, your surroundings, and the present moment.

📝 Notice what you need.

Instead of asking yourself, “What should I be doing?”, try asking:
“What do I need today?”

Rest? Connection? Movement? Quiet? Support?

💛 Practice gratitude gently.

At the end of the day, notice one small thing you appreciate. It doesn’t have to be something extraordinary – a kind message, a sunny afternoon, or a moment of peace is enough.

And perhaps the most important practice: allow yourself to change with the season. You don’t have to feel the same way in October as you did in July. Different seasons can bring different needs – and that’s okay.

This Thanksgiving, may we find moments of gratitude, connection, and kindness toward ourselves and others. 🍂

🧡 Orange Shirt Day – September 30

September 30 is Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. It is a day to honour Residential School Survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and learn about the history and lasting impacts of the residential school system.

Why do we wear orange?

Orange Shirt Day was created in 2013 by residential school Survivor Phyllis Webstad, whose story has become central to the day’s message.

In 1973, when Phyllis was six years old, she was excited to attend residential school in British Columbia. Her grandmother had bought her a new, bright orange shirt for her first day. When she arrived at the school, her clothing was taken away, including her new shirt, which was never returned.

Phyllis later shared how the experience made her feel that she did not matter. Her story inspired Orange Shirt Day and the message “Every Child Matters.”

Remembering the residential school system

For more than a century, the residential school system forcibly separated many First Nations, Inuit and Métis children from their families and communities. The system sought to assimilate Indigenous children by separating them from their cultures, languages, traditions and families. Survivors have shared experiences of neglect, abuse and profound loss, and the effects continue to be felt across generations.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was established in 2021 in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 80. September 30 provides an opportunity to listen, learn, remember and reflect on the history and legacy of residential schools.

At CUIAS, we recognize the importance of learning about the history of the land we now call home and reflecting on what truth and reconciliation mean for communities across Canada.

This September 30, take time to learn, listen and reflect.

Every Child Matters.

🔔 Reminder! Our “Anti-Stress” Support Group meeting is this Saturday!

CUIAS invites you to join our “Anti-Stress” Support Group — a safe and comfortable space where you can talk about your feelings, explore emotions, share your experiences, and connect with others who may be facing similar challenges.

The theme of the meeting is “Speak. Listen. Understand.” Together, we will discuss how to openly communicate our feelings and needs, listen to others, and find common ground even in difficult situations.

This group is an opportunity to share experiences, support one another, and discover ways to better cope with challenges while gradually restoring inner balance and emotional well-being.

09/16/2026

September is Ukrainian Heritage Month in Canada. It is a time to recognize Ukrainian culture, history, traditions, and the contributions of Ukrainian Canadians to communities across the country.

After moving to a new country, many familiar things change. A new language, environment, work, daily routines, and social connections all require time and emotional resources to adjust. During this period, familiar traditions can become an important source of support. The Ukrainian language, family recipes, music, celebrations, traditional arts, and connections with the Ukrainian community can help maintain a sense of connection to our past and our personal history.

Keeping cultural traditions does not mean stepping away from adaptation. We can discover a new country while continuing to value the things that have shaped who we are. Creating new traditions in Canada, sharing Ukrainian culture with our children, and participating in community events can help connect our past with our present and gradually create a sense of home in a new place.

Mental health care is not only about rest or professional support. It is also about connection to people, culture, values, and the things that give us a sense of belonging. Our roots can be more than a part of our history. They can also be a source of strength as we build our lives today.
