Food bank visits are growing in Ontario – but behind every statistic is a child, neighbour, friend, or family who is making impossible choices to get by.

Understanding what’s driving the need for food banks is one of the first steps to creating meaningful change. With our Hunger in My Community tool, you can see how many people rely on food banks in your area, who is most affected, and learn how housing costs, incomes, and the rising cost of living are contributing to hunger in the province.

We make sure food banks have the resources and training they need to meet the unique needs of their communities through our Feed Possibility pillar, and our partners have made a significant impact with their support.

CG Wellington has supported Feed Possibility as a pillar sponsor for the last three years, contributing over $300,000 to help food banks expand their storage and refrigeration capacity, make operational upgrades, and to create new programs.

The impact doesn’t end there – CG Wellington, along with meaningful support from CAA South Central Ontario and Elementary Educators have made it possible for food banks to make the capacity-building changes needed to help thousands of people across the province.

Every community is different, but as the provincial network of over 1,200 food banks and hunger-relief organizations, we see common factors driving hunger across Ontario.

More people are struggling to afford basic necessities like food and housing, and decisions at all levels of government can make a meaningful difference those facing hunger.

When policies at different levels of government don’t align, municipalities see the impacts of these decisions firsthand, and food banks are on the ground doing essential, urgent work to meet the need in their community.

When Andrew and Nicole’s family hit a rough patch after an unexpected job loss, they made the difficult decision to turn to a food bank for help.

At the food bank, they were able to receive the food and support they needed. The food bank was even able to provide them with the ingredients for a turkey dinner, allowing them to gather on Thanksgiving the way they used to. As a family, the Thanksgiving meal offered a sense of hope that things could get better – and your compassion can create moments like this.

You can help us meet the rising need and be there for families trying to get back on their feet – and until October 12, our partners Ontario Turkey will match your donation, making your generosity go twice as far. Learn more here: https://ow.ly/ejLQ50ZM1JV

It’s time to end hunger in Ontario – but local communities can’t solve hunger alone.

More people than ever are turning to food banks to get by, and though our network is working hard to provide essential support to people and families every day, many of the reasons someone may need the help of a food bank are shaped by policies at all levels of government.

With municipal elections just around the corner, there’s opportunity to learn about hunger in your community, ask questions, and encourage local leaders to champion the changes needed to reduce hunger across Ontario. Learn more here: https://ow.ly/yoMH50ZOoj0

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and we honour the survivors, families, and communities tragically impacted by residential schools. This ongoing legacy has not only led to significant harm for those impacted, but to broader consequences connected to the involuntary disruption of Indigenous ways of life, which include a drastic effect on the control of local food systems.

Across the continent, there is a lasting relationship between colonial systems and food insecurity, and, on this day, we’re reflecting on the continuing work we can do to build and strengthen relationships and community resilience together. We believe that advancing Truth and Reconciliation is essential to creating an Ontario where everyone has access to the food they need.

Today, we encourage everyone to take action, learn more, and to reflect on their relationship to the land. We invite you to read more about food sovereignty and some of the Indigenous-led organizations working to increase it in their regions here: https://ow.ly/sKfo50ZPg3E

More people than ever turn to food banks in Ontario to get by – but record-high need in the province is only part of the story. A rising number of food bank visits tells us about the challenges our communities are facing, but understanding why these challenges are growing is the first step in creating meaningful, long-term change.
