Caregiving within veteran communities often involves much more than physical or clinical support alone.

Many caregivers build meaningful relationships with veterans over time through conversation, trust, consistency, humour, storytelling, and being present during difficult transitions.

These relationships can carry emotional weight that is not always openly acknowledged within caregiving and helping professions.

We are creating space for caregivers and helping professionals to share their experiences and perspectives.

Your Voice Matters.

Were there moments where a veteran’s personal story, memories, or life experiences stayed with you long after the interaction ended? What made that moment meaningful to you? 💬

If you feel comfortable, share your story below or email [email protected]

When you support someone over time, getting to know them, their family, and their story, that connection does not simply disappear when they die.

For many caregivers and helping professionals, grief and emotional labour are part of the work, yet what happens afterward is not always openly talked about or supported.

We value your experience.

Can you tell us about what it’s like for you after someone you’ve supported for a long time dies? What kinds of support feel missing during those moments? 💬

If you feel comfortable, share your story below or email [email protected]

Emotional labour is part of caregiving and helping roles. It’s showing up for others, holding space, and continuing on after difficult moments.

Sometimes those experiences can feel like a kind of grief that does not always have a place to go.

Through our Compassion in Action initiative, we are listening to caregivers and helping professionals to better understand these experiences.

Your Voice Matters.

Can you tell us about a moment in your work that stayed with you emotionally? What kinds of support do you wish had been available during that experience? 💬

If you feel comfortable, share your story below or email [email protected]

Home Hospice Association uses the term Forgotten Responder to recognize caregivers and helping professionals whose work is essential, yet often unseen.

If you work in one of these roles, you may already understand what we mean. Supporting people and families through illness, death, and grief can stay with you long after the moment has passed.

Many caregivers carry stories, emotions, and experiences that are not always openly talked about.

Through our Compassion in Action initiative, we are creating space for these conversations and listening to the lived experiences of caregivers and helping professionals.

Your Voice Matters.

Can you tell us about a time when you had to look for support outside of work? What helped, even a little? 💬

If you feel comfortable, share your story below or email [email protected]

Home Hospice Association extends heartfelt thanks to the Christina Mary Hendrie Trust for supporting Compassion in Action: Healing the Hearts of Caregivers who Support Veterans.

This multi-faceted initiative strengthens the mental health and well-being of caregivers who walk alongside veterans from terminal diagnosis through end-of-life. By addressing grief intensity, caregiver burnout, and long-term emotional resilience, the program provides structured grief literacy education, peer support, and accessible bereavement resources.

No one should have to navigate illness, caregiving, dying, or grief alone. When HHA became a Canadian Registered Charity in 2016, we officially dedicated ourselves to community based, non-medical end of life care. Since that day, HHA has been helping strengthen the emotional, practical, and human support surrounding some of life’s most difficult experiences.
