As Pride Season begins across Canada, communities are once again raising Pride flags as visible symbols of inclusion, belonging, and the belief that all persons are equal and none is other. These symbols of 2SLGBTQI inclusion are especially important at a time when police-reported hate crimes in Canada remain at historically high levels, having more than doubled since 2018.

While symbols alone are not enough, flying the Pride flag remains an important act of solidarity and a visible commitment to building communities where everyone can thrive. Together, we can help ensure that our communities remain places where diversity is celebrated, inclusion is visible, and every person is equal, not other.

Egale Canada is concerned by the findings of Statistics Canada’s newly released report, Perceptions of gender-based violence and gender equality, identity and expression in Canada, which compares public attitudes between 2018 and 2025. While Canada has long been recognized as a leader in advancing 2SLGBTQI rights, this report signals a troubling shift in support for gender diversity, particularly for transgender and gender diverse communities

This research reinforces what Egale Canada and many 2SLGBTQI community members and allies have been witnessing: rising misinformation, anti-trans views, and transphobic policies are threatening 2SLGBTQI rights, creating a shift against inclusion and acceptance.

We must confront the misinformation that continues to shape public attitudes, educate ourselves and others, and most importantly, listen and amplify their voices with their lived experiences to guide our response.

The term q***r can denote same-gender attraction or reflect more complex dynamics between one’s s*x, gender, and attraction experiences. Despite the term’s earlier historical uses as a slur, many individuals in the 2SLGBTQI community have claimed the word for themselves as a sense of empowerment, finding it an appropriate label for self-identifying.

In 1993, Egale Canada launched a high-profile national campaign during the Canadian federal election, which included an MP questionnaire and an election tabloid that sought to hold candidates accountable for their positions on 2SLGBTQI issues. This campaign informed voters on candidate positions, raised awareness of the lack of legal protections for gay and le***an Canadians, and pressured parties to include equality rights in their platforms.
