Go Dry this July to raise funds for Aussies affected by cancer.

Behind every cancer diagnosis is a person, a family, and a story.

This World Hospice & Palliative Care Day, we acknowledge the profound impact of compassionate, person-centred care on patients and families navigating cancer.

As Professor Brian Le, Director of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Palliative Care Unit, says: "Our patients and families are often doing it a bit harder than we are. Every contribution helps improve dignity, comfort and wellbeing."

Thanks to supporters of Dry July, The Royal Melbourne Hospital can continue funding projects and equipment that help improve the care experience for patients and families facing cancer, including in its Palliative Care Unit.

September is all about fresh starts. Swapping hot chocolates for iced teas, Netflix for long walks, and comfy blankets for picnic rugs.

💚 September 15th is World Lymphoma Awareness Day, a day to raise awareness of lymphoma and recognise the support available for Australians affected. Today, we're proud to recognise one of our Dry July beneficiaries, Lymphoma Australia, the only organisation in Australia dedicated exclusively to supporting people impacted by lymphoma.

At 36, Melanie was living a busy life as a doctor and mum when a small, painless lump appeared above her left collarbone. Though small, it was hard to ignore, and she quickly realised something wasn't right.

The wait for answers was one of the most isolating and frightening times of her life. After multiple tests, Melanie was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. Along with the lump, she developed a persistent cough and faced uncertainty about what lay ahead. “The diagnosis changed everything.”

Treatment was physically and emotionally exhausting, bringing severe pain, fatigue and challenging side effects. Throughout it all, she relied heavily on the support of family and friends.

During treatment, Melanie discovered Lymphoma Australia and ordered one of their welcome kits. “It was beautifully packaged with thoughtful items that made me feel genuinely cared for.” The Lymphoma Australia Nurse Support Line became one of her most valuable sources of support. “Even to me as a doctor, it was such a comfort to know there was expert support available whenever I needed it.”

The specialist nurses helped Melanie understand treatment side effects, navigate the fear of relapse and provided reassurance whenever she needed someone to listen. She also found strength and connection through the Lymphoma Australia Facebook support group.

Through Dry July, we're proud to support Lymphoma Australia's specialist nurses, who provide expert care, guidance and support to people impacted by lymphoma across the country, ensuring no one has to face lymphoma alone.

We're proud to share Taz's story and recognise the incredible care provided by Barwon Health's Andrew Love Cancer Centre and the dedicated staff supporting local cancer centres every day.

Cancer wasn't something Taz ever expected. She was busy enjoying life, building her career and looking ahead to the future when she was suddenly faced with a life-changing cancer diagnosis. “Cancer is an absolute sh*tshow. I wish I didn't know that first-hand, but here we are on the fight of my life.”

Overnight, Taz's world became appointments, chemotherapy, scans, waiting rooms and uncertainty. “It flips your life upside down overnight and suddenly your world becomes appointments, chemo, exhaustion, scans, waiting rooms, and trying to hold onto some version of yourself through it all.”

Throughout the toughest days of treatment, Taz found strength in the care and compassion of the teams at Barwon Health's Andrew Love Cancer Centre and the nurses on Baxter 6.

The support she received went far beyond medical treatment. “They're not only helping save my life, they somehow still manage to make me smile.”

Doing Dry July was Taz’s way of giving back to the people who supported her through the fight of her life. Through Dry July, funds raised for Barwon Health Foundation are helping to improve cancer care, patient support programs and wellbeing services for people receiving treatment close to home.

Dry July might be over, but your healthy habits don’t have to be. 💪
If you’re looking to keep the momentum going, here are a few easy ways to cut back on alcohol:

💧 Start with a non-alcoholic drink to quench your thirst
🥂 Alternate alcoholic drinks with water
🍽️ Eat while drinking (avoid salty snacks!)
🍋 Try a spritzer or shandy to dilute your drinks
📆 Set at least two alcohol-free days a week
📏 Know your standard drinks – measuring matters

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. With nearly 29,000 men expected to be diagnosed this year alone, prostate cancer's impact extends far beyond the individual, affecting families, friends, carers, and communities across the country.

Thanks to your Dry July support, funds are helping Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia provide Specialist Prostate Cancer Nurses with the resources they need to deliver vital care, trusted information, and guidance for men and their families when it's needed most.

From answering questions in the days following diagnosis to supporting men through treatment and recovery, these nurses provide a level of care and reassurance that makes a real difference during some of life's most challenging moments. They also help families better understand prostate cancer and access the support they need along the way.

Every dollar raised is reinvested into life-changing research, awareness, and support programs that help save lives and improve quality of life for Australian men living with prostate cancer.
