They Were Always Only a Phone Call Away

By going Dry this July for Cancer Council, you’re helping them provide people like Wendy with vital support.

Just six months after moving her family to the Sunshine Coast, Wendy was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. She faced an intense course of treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.

During this time, she reached out to Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 support line.

“They were good listeners. They understood what I was going through and gave me tools to help me cope… it was comforting to know they were always only a phone call away.”

After a recurrence, Wendy made the difficult decision to undergo further treatment. Today, she gives back as a Cancer Council volunteer, supporting others going through a similar journey.

“Cancer has changed me for the better… I want to give others hope and strength.”

"Her involvement has been transformative”

Looking for a reason to go Dry this July? By signing up and raising funds in support of Bowel Cancer Australia, you'll be helping to expand their vital specialist Bowel Care Nurse program, ensuring more patients like Alexis receive dedicated, in-person support throughout their cancer journey.

Alexis was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021 and underwent surgery followed by six months of intensive chemotherapy. While her medical care was excellent, she often felt disconnected from a supportive bowel cancer community, until a recurrence led her to a connection with specialist Bowel Care Nurse, Sue.

Sue quickly became an invaluable source of support for Alexis. Alexis shares that this support was life-changing, describing Sue as a transformative resource who provided clear information and unwavering care, regularly visiting during treatment cycles and consistently checking in on her wellbeing, especially during difficult times.
