Over the past 18 months, our Start Strong Pathways funding has supported a partnership with Tresillian Dubbo, showing what can happen when we stay with a community, listen and adapt.

What began as a six-week program has grown into accessible Play and Learn workshops for families, bringing together expertise in brain development, attachment, respectful caregiving, play and more.

After modest participation in 2025, we focused on strengthening the relationship rather than simply growing the program. This year, demand has grown through word of mouth, with families sharing the workshops through their own mothersโ€™ groups and friendship networks.

The impact can be seen in the small shifts families take home. One mother shared how the session changed the way she understood her babyโ€™s fussing. Instead of wondering whether her baby needed more stimulation, she began asking:
โ€œWhat might my baby actually be communicating?โ€

That shift is at the heart of Learning with Community: turning evidence-informed practice into meaningful, everyday learning for children and families.

A child who can't wait for a turn. A child who forgets the second half of what you asked. A child who struggles when the plan changes.

It looks like behaviour. Usually it's executive function: the brain skills that let children hold information in mind, cope when things change, and stop and think before they act.
New three-part series with sector expert Jennifer Ribarovski.

- What executive function actually is, and how it develops across the early years.
- How to build working memory, cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control.
- Why these skills underpin learning, wellbeing, friendships and settling into school.

In 1940, educators at the Lady Gowrie Child Centres collected more than two thousand children's drawings and studied them for two years.

They wanted to know what children were really doing when they made marks, and what kind of space would help. What they learned shaped everything that followed. The easels, the brushes, how much paper to set out, even the paint recipes printed in the 1944 handbook.

86 years on, we're still asking the same question. When your child paints, draws or makes something, they're showing us how they think, who they're becoming and the ideas they're working out. That's why the space, the materials and the time to create still matter here, every single day.

It all started with noticing the Postman across the street๐Ÿ“ฎ

In this episode of Let's Talk Pedagogy, Pedagogical Coach Fiona Veld-Brown chats with Susy Fuller from Gowrie NSW Lithgow about an inquiry with children from birth to two, sparked by noticing the local Postman and growing into a shared curiosity about communication, connection and belonging.

In this episode you will hear Susy talk about:
- how noticing became the starting point for an infant inquiry
- what the children revealed about their right to communication and belonging
- how educators followed children's curiosities, providing provocations and thoughtfully designed environments
- what our youngest citizens notice about our local community.

Who should listen in? Educators and teachers working with children from birth to two, at any stage of your career.

What becomes possible when educators and teachers are trusted, supported and inspired to keep deepening their practice?

At Erskineville EEC, that commitment has been recognised with an Exceeding rating.

Following their recent assessment and rating visit, the team has been acknowledged for their commitment to their work, and for their ongoing willingness to engage in reflective practice.

This achievement reflects the professional curiosity, relationships, and conversations, of the educators that strengthens practice over time. Congratulations to Centre Director Dasha and the Erskineville team on this very well-deserved recognition.

We are proud to see their thoughtful, courageous and sustained approach to professional practice recognised and celebrated through the assessment and rating process.

There are still spots available for our September Clemton Park EEC Inquiry Visit - and trust us, you don't want to miss this one.

This is a rare chance to step inside a preschool space that has genuinely reimagined what child-led curriculum can look like - and see it alive and in action. You'll spend time immersed in the indoor and outdoor environments, explore classroom documentation, and connect with a team deeply committed to elevating children's voices and ideas.

Then, two weeks later, reconnect online for a follow-up Q&A with Centre Director Frida Caris and preschool teacher Lucy Carmichael to keep the thinking going.

๐Ÿ“ Session 1: In-person at Clemton Park - 23 Sep, 9:30amโ€“12:30pm
๐Ÿ’ป Session 2: Online follow-up - 7 Oct, 10:00โ€“11:00am

National Child Protection Week runs from 6 to 12 September. This year's theme is "Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action".

Ours took the shape of our Charter of Children's Rights, written together with children, families and educators across Gowrie NSW.

The Charter sets out five rights. To feel safe and loved. To play and learn. To be included and belong. To express myself and be heard. And to have influence.

Those last two look like participation rights, and they are. They are also part of how a child stays safe. A child who is used to being listened to, and who has seen adults actually do something about what they said, is a child who will speak up when something does not feel right.

So when we ask children what they think about real decisions in their room, and make sure they can see their ideas change something, that is not separate from keeping them safe. It is part of it.
