Happy World Teachers’ Day!

Meet Amelia, Elisha and Belinda, the leaders of our education programs:

🍎 FEAST - Our food education program for schools

🥕 NEST - Our cooking and nutrition program for vulnerable adults

🍳 Nourish - Our hospitality training program for young people facing barriers to education and employment

Amelia has gone from teaching in the classroom to building a program that supports teachers! In 2017 she started working with OzHarvest to develop FEAST, which has now reached over 2000 schools across Australia. One of her many favourite moments from leading the program came when a high school hospitality class joined a primary school’s FEAST class to cook together. “FEAST creates so many community and emotional touchpoints.”

Elisha joined OzHarvest as a NEST volunteer and now leads the program. A moment that showed her NEST’s impact was meeting a participant who’d lost her job and said Monday’s class was the highlight of her week. Six months later, she’d found work and was still meal-prepping with everything she’d learned. “That’s NEST. It shows up for people when life is hard, and what it leaves behind goes far beyond skills.”

Belinda was a Chef and Culinary Trainer before she came on board to help build Nourish. She’s particularly proud of the outcomes Nourish has for its students, and how many stay connected with OzHarvest long after graduating, often calling to share where they’re working and to say thank you. “It is impossible not to be inspired by the young people we work with and the amazing team that make the magic happen.”

CEO CookOff has some sporting legends sign ups as newly appointed Cricket Australia Chair David Boon, Cricket Tasmania CEO Dom Baker and Tasmania Devils CEO Brendan Gale are all stepping into the kitchen to cook up change for people in need.

As Boonie says, “It’s not about the competition, it’s about coming together to raise as much as we can as a collective.” 💛

For our Queensland State Manager Michaela Windsor, CEO CookOff is about so much more than the night itself.

There’s an incredible amount of generosity flowing from the Brisbane business community and beyond. But it’s also a rare chance to sit down, share a meal and connect with people in our community experiencing food insecurity.

At OzHarvest, where you start isn’t always where you end up 💛

Shell Millingen had sold her business and was looking for a change when she started volunteering with us in 2018. In 2021,(swipe to see her iconic application video 🎬), she joined on a two-month contract supporting our Sydney Volunteer Coordinator. Shell was such an asset to the team that her contract kept getting extended, and she ended up spending four years in our NSW Volunteer Team.

In addition to her day job with us, Shell started volunteering with OzHarvest Ventures and loved it so much she took the leap into a new role as Sales and Brand Ambassador. “I loved the products, the innovation and, most importantly, the fact that I was selling something with such a strong purpose behind it.”

We asked Shell the important question: which OzHarvest Shop product does she love most? “Conscious Drink, hands down. It’s delicious, it’s refreshing, it rescues blueberries that would otherwise have gone to waste and it supports an Indigenous supply chain.”
