Habitat for Humanity Australia Habitat for Humanity is a not-for-profit provider of housing for low-income families in need. So with Habitat your dollar goes further.

We believe a stable, secure home creates the foundation for change, giving people the opportunity to be healthier, happier and more secure and for children to be better nourished and better educated. We believe building a decent home provides much more than bricks and mortar – it provides real hope for the future. We don’t give hand-outs; we give people hand-ups by building homes in partnership with families both in Australia and overseas. They put in labour and a deposit, and we assist with the expertise and financing and importantly, as the no-profit loan is repaid, it helps to finance even more homes for people in need. We don’t just provide a roof – we build communities. We also address water supply and sanitation issues and in some communities provide health, education – like teaching financial literacy and livelihood assistance.

World Habitat Day was yesterday and the theme for this year is Adequate Housing for All.

An estimated 2.8 billion people worldwide face some form of housing inadequacy. Close to 1.1 billion live in slums and informal settlements.

These aren't just numbers. They're families without a safe place to sleep, without stability, without the dignity that comes with having somewhere to call home.

World Habitat Day asks us to confront how far there still is to go. It's work we're committed to every day, not just one day a year.

Throughout July, our Brush with Kindness volunteers rolled up their sleeves for a month-long blitz, supporting frontline charities that provide vital services for First Nations people across Australia.

Volunteers from JAMF, MADDOCKS, Terumo, Bloomberg, Service Now, Arbonne, Built, Salta Brothers, Helia, Rawson Group, and Seymour Whyte joined us to help refresh and repair 10 homes, supporting 60 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children escaping family and domestic violence.

It's a small way of showing up during NAIDOC Week and beyond, and a reminder of what's possible when communities come together.

Together with Habitat for Humanity Bangladesh, and supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's (DFAT) , our Head of International Programs, Chris Govers, recently visited Dhaka, Bangladesh, to strengthen the partnership and help facilitate a DFAT monitoring visit to our Building Resilience in Slum Settlements project.

It's been a year of big changes for this project, including a move to a new community, so this trip was all about listening, learning, and reconnecting.

A highlight: hearing from the Community Wellbeing Committee, local leaders driving real change - new housing, communal bathhouses and toilets, as well as combined community drainage and walkway infrastructure to tackle the flooding, contaminated water, and mobility challenges that's long affected community health and disaster preparedness across the settlement.

Community-led resilience, built together. That's the work. 💙

"I don't even have an inch of land to my name anymore."

Manju cuts open her emergency shelter kit with a sickle, searching for the tarpaulin. She needs it to shelter the area where she will observe funeral rites for the five members of her family taken by the floods in Nepal: her son, three grandchildren, and her elder sister.

Her home is gone. The land it stood on is now part of the river. The rice, the pigs, the jewellery, the mattress, the blanket, everything was swept away with the water.

She is the only member of her family left in Rasuwa. She is sleeping on a neighbour's porch, hoping the water doesn't return.

Even in grief, Manju is thinking of others, of the rituals owed to her family, of the resources needed when relatives arrive to mourn. The tarpaulin she holds will shelter them from the rain.

"It is a relief, it's support," she says. "Otherwise, there would be nothing."

This is the reality facing families across Nepal right now. Your support has helped deliver Emergency Shelter Kits to families who have lost everything, but the need is still urgent.
