We are pleased to announce that Christopher Bryant has won the 2026 Portside Review Human Rights Essay Prize: Rainbow Pride for his essay ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’.

The judging panel also awarded second place to M Lombaard for ‘Pollution Stops the Reflection’, and third place to Em Readman 🍉🌈 for ‘I Owe Everything to Old Lesbians’.

In addition to the three prize recipients, eight essays have been shortlisted for publication in Portside Review Issue 19, which is now available to read: https://www.portsidereview.com/hrep-2026

Together, these essays reflect the richness, diversity and complexity of LGBTQIA2S+ lived experiences, offering personal, political and creative perspectives on human rights across the Indian Ocean and beyond.

The prize received submissions from writers across Australia and internationally. We thank every writer who entrusted us with their work and contributed to an outstanding collection of essays.

Join Nabilah Said while she's in Boorloo/Perth for two special events.

Nabilah is an award-winning Singaporean playwright and the 2026 Patricia Kailis International Writing Fellow at Centre for Stories. Her work explores identity, migration, belonging and the intersections between personal and collective histories. Her plays have been presented across Singapore, London, Malaysia, Nepal, Taiwan and South Korea.

We're delighted to announce Singapore-based playwright, journalist and artist Nabilah Said as the 2026 Patricia Kailis International Writing Fellow.

Nabilah's work explores identity, migration and belonging. During her residency in Boorloo/Perth, she'll continue developing Territori, a new work examining the shared histories of Singapore and Christmas Island through the lens of Malay diasporic identity.

As part of the Fellowship, Nabilah will spend time developing her work, engaging with local communities, travelling to the Kimberley, and joining us for a special In Conversation event on Thursday 30 July: https://events.humanitix.com/in-conversation-with-nabilah-said

The Patricia Kailis International Writing Fellowship is made possible through the generosity of Dr George Kailis and supports writers living outside Australia whose work fosters belonging and cross-cultural understanding.
