The 2026 Dementia Symposium is back and promises to be a must-attend event for all Dementia Change Champions, Practitioners, Service Providers, Carers and Administrators.

This year's theme, "Changing the Journey," will focus on the State Dementia Action Plan, its rollout, its impact on awareness, enabled environments, risks and training, and the vital role that early recognition and timely intervention play in improving outcomes for people living with dementia. We will also explore VAD and how that is “Changing the Journey.”

Western Australia Day celebrates everything that makes WA such a strong, connected and compassionate community. Our history is rich and future is bright!

However over 48,000 people in WA are living with dementia, which is the leading cause of death for people aged 65 and older. Alzheimer's WA is proud to be part of a State creating Dementia Friendly Communities where people living with dementia can age with dignity and identity, feel understood, included, supported, and valued. Our social support groups, home care services, education, day and overnight respite are making a real difference.

This National Reconciliation Week, we unite to celebrate and honour the rich history, culture, and achievements of First Nations peoples. It's also a time to recognise the 3-5 times higher prevalence of dementia, often occurring at a younger age, and the importance of closing the health gap in regional and remote communities.

This year’s theme, “ALL IN” is a call for all Australians to commit to reconciliation every single day, and a reminder that all of us can take action to create meaningful change. Alzheimer’s WA’s on-country work in Bidyadanga highlighted the importance of culturally appropriate service delivery, and the need to begin dementia prevention decades earlier through better management of chronic disease, education, hearing health, social connection, physical activity, and reducing smoking and harmful alcohol use.

How can we contribute?
- Learn about the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the importance of community-based care.
- Keeping Elders connected to country and culture.
- Support community-led education and training.
- Address lifestyle risk factors earlier.

Stronger Together

AWA Chairman, Professor Warren Harding, AM and CEO Ella Dachs represented Alzheimer's WA at a fabulous night hosted by Volunteering WA and MC’d by ABC’s Nadia Mitsopoulos, a person with the experience of a family member who lived with dementia.

The evening celebrated the wonderful work of the 1.5 million volunteers across WA, whose contributions support dementia cafes, mental health services, Indigenous communities, and even school backpack programs in the Northwest. Being National Volunteers Week the Minister for Volunteering, Hon Hannah Beazley MLA acknowledged the vital role volunteers play in building compassionate communities.

We were proud to have nominated our own Judy Joukador for the tremendous work she does at Memory Café at The Globe in South Perth on Monday mornings.

It was also heartwarming to see 18-year-old Ellie Vrankovich named Young Volunteer of the Year, showing that purpose and volunteering can begin in a young heart!

Yesterday morning Alzheimer's WA (AWA) welcomed volunteers and donors to Morning Tea at Mary Chester House, Shenton Park - a celebration of the people who make our work possible.

AWA Chairman, Professor Warren Harding, AM and CEO Ella Dachs reflected on the meaningful impact of our staff and volunteers across Western Australia and offered sincere thanks to our generous donors and committed volunteers.

Warm congratulations to our staff who received Living Value Awards on the day! You model the values of Alzheimer’s WA each day.
