Propel Youth Arts WA is closing down at the end of June.

In 2023, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries rejected Propel application for ongoing operational funding. While the Department of Local Government Sport and the Creative Industries granted a project funding boost in 2024, it wasn’t enough to make up for the absence of core funding nor the increased costs of operating over the last few years.

We tried reducing project scopes, cancelling events and seeking alternate funding streams to remain viable. But despite those efforts, the absence of core funding and the unwillingness of the WA Government to adequately resource Propel has left the Board with no option but to close down the organisation.

It’s an understatement to say we feel this loss deeply.

It has been 22 years’ worth of festivals, mentorship and creative ambition. Since its founding in 2003, we have supported 500,000 of you through our key programs: KickstART Festival, the Drug Aware YCulture Metro arts grant, the emerging producer platform PIVOT, the regional touring Sketchbook program and touring exhibition, and plenty more projects and long-running programs.

We send a heartfelt thank you to our exceptionally talented and dedicated staff and volunteers over the years, led by Executive Director Jamie McGleave.

Most importantly, we’re immensely grateful to YOU - our supporters, volunteers and advocates, for whom being a part of the arts as a young person, or supporting young people to engage, is a vital part of being a West Australian.

Creative, connected, and courageous young people are the future of this beautiful state. Keep making art and be good to each other.

If you have any questions, please reach out.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of the 2025 KickstART Festival.

After navigating ongoing financial challenges over the past two years and engaging in extensive discussions within our team in recent months, we’ve made the incredibly difficult decision to cancel the 2025 KickstART Festival.

We understand how disappointing this news may be, but we want to emphasise that it is in no way a reflection of the incredible work contributed by so many to this year’s program. We are aware that artists, staff, volunteers and the extended community will be affected, and we are working with partners and stakeholders to help support those impacted by this transition.

We are aware that this news will have a ripple effect on many, and encourage anyone needing support to reach out to the following services:

▪️Youth Focus – Free mental health support for young people aged 12–25. Call (08) 6266 4333 or visit www.youthfocus.com.au.
▪️Headspace – Mental health support for young people aged 12–25. Visit a local centre or access online support at www.headspace.org.au.
▪️Beyond Blue – Support for anxiety, depression, and mental health concerns. Call 1300 22 4636 or visit www.beyondblue.org.au.

For over two decades, Propel has been proud to offer a platform for young creatives in Western Australia. We are immensely grateful for the support and contributions of every individual who has been part of this journey. Propel remains committed to advocating for young artists in Western Australia and will be engaging with decision-makers over the coming months to push for greater investment in young creatives and the future of WA’s creative sector.

Thank you for your ongoing belief in the power of youth-led creativity.

We want to extend a big thank you to everyone who joined us for Pivot 2024! It was an inspiring day uniting creatives and arts workers across an array of creative disciplines. The day served as a great reminder of the passion, curiosity and kindness that exists within the WA arts community. The team at Propel are harnessing this energy as we head into an exciting season preparing for KickstART 2025! 💥

A special shoutout to The Platform Perth, La Mint, and Pivot 2024 volunteers, we couldn't have done it without your contributions.
