The Board, members and staff of Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club are deeply saddened by the death of Greg O’Neill following the shark incident off our beach.
Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Greg’s family, friends and loved ones. We are also thinking of Greg’s friend Gibbo, who was with him at the time, and all those who witnessed or were affected by the incident.
A number of Club members, staff and others assisted with the immediate response and subsequent operations. Please be mindful of this when dealing with our team this week.
We sincerely thank everyone who responded. Their willingness to assist in extremely difficult circumstances demonstrated extraordinary courage, care and commitment to our community.
The wellbeing of our people is our immediate priority. The Club is working with Surf Life Saving WA and other support services to ensure assistance is available to those affected. We recognise that people will process what happened in different ways and at different times.
The Club is working closely with Surf Life Saving WA, the City of Joondalup and the relevant authorities to understand the next steps and consider what additional measures may be appropriate. Any decisions will be guided by expert advice and the safety and wellbeing of our members and community.
Sorrento is a strong and caring community. In the days and weeks ahead, the Club will continue to support those affected and work with our partners to help our community move forward together.
