Our protections matter Our communities are facing some of the most serious attacks on our rights and protections in many years. Right now, multiple Bills are being pushed that would strip protections from trans people and take a wrecking ball to Australia’s anti-discrimination laws more broadly.....

“Send in the Clowns” is one of the most poignant songs ever written for the stage.

Composed by Stephen Sondheim for the 1973 musical A Little Night Music, the song is not really about circus clowns at all. Instead, the “clowns” represent the foolishness of human relationships and the painful irony of missed opportunities.

The song is sung by the character Désirée, an actress reflecting on a love that slipped through her fingers. After years of poor timing, misunderstandings and choices that seemed right at the time, she finally realises what she has lost. Her quiet plea, “Send in the clowns,” is less a joke and more an acknowledgement that life can sometimes feel like a tragic comedy.

What makes the song so powerful is its honesty. Rather than grand declarations of heartbreak, it captures something more universal: the regret of wondering what might have been.

Over the years, the song has been recorded by countless artists including Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand and Sarah Vaughan, becoming one of the most beloved standards in modern musical theatre.

More than fifty years after it was first performed, “Send in the Clowns” continues to resonate because it reminds us that love, loss and longing are experiences we all share.
