In the midst of lots of activity in the club, we pause to show the results of a quick project we did in Dec 2024. St Peter's Primary School in East Keilor donated over 200 Chromebooks to our club. We reached out to other Rotary Clubs and here is an article which celebrates 100 of them heading to a school in Sri Lanka with the assistance of Rotary ChangeMaker Jenny Foster. We have been talking to Jenny about a plethora of projects, making changes in small but significant ways to groups all over our region and world. At the same time as this article came out, we again received another gift from St Peter's Primary School of 24 boxes of children's books from their library. Another shipment heading to the same school in Sri Lanka. Are you thinking of projects using such rich resources as your local primary school? Be inspired!

Amazing persistence and achievement, Ciri (and Eric - wow, what a mentor - you are really changing lives).

Huge congratulations to Ciri on passing her driving test! 🎉
Ciri’s success was made possible with the support and dedication of her mentor, Eric.

Over her two years in the program, Ciri was fortunate to be guided by a few different mentors. When her original mentor, Tracey, was unable to continue, Eric stepped in and supported Ciri through her final drives before her big day.

A massive thank you to Eric and all our incredible volunteer mentors who make such a lasting difference in the lives of young drivers. 🙌

From our RI President Stephanie Urchick - an important message about where Rotary stands:

Dear Rotary members,

Over the past few months, while we visited Rotary clubs worldwide and witnessed inspiring projects that are making a tangible difference in their communities, many have approached us with concerns about the current political and economic volatility, and its potential impact on the work that we do.

We want to assure you that in times of uncertainty, one thing is certain - our mission and values remain unchanged. Rotary is a force for good in the world because we are deeply embedded in communities. We will continue to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace.

The ideals of service, fellowship, and diversity have enabled us to transcend boundaries of all kinds. We bring people of all backgrounds together, foster collaboration, and make our communities stronger.

For 120 years Rotary has thrived through two World Wars, through the Cold War, and through multiple deadly pandemics. We have endured and strengthened because we adhere to our mission and to our values. In times like these, we are once again reminded of the strength of Rotary and the importance of supporting our organization.

As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've helped reduce polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Regardless of what lies ahead, we will stay the course and keep our commitment to the world’s children by ending polio forever. At present, we’re coordinating with our global partners to closely monitor and assess the fast-evolving situation, proactively working with many governments to sustain their financial support and seek alternative funding sources. Now more than ever, your financial support of PolioPlus is critical.

We will continue to support our Areas of Focus to forge solutions and fulfill long-term goals. Through our programs, grants, and people-to-people diplomacy, we address the underlying causes of conflicts, creating an environment conducive to peace. We work with our partners to engage in sustainable projects that tackle poverty, inequality, and lack of access to education in our own communities and those around the world. Rotary’s recent peace conference in Istanbul, which attracted more than 1,000 Rotary members, peace builders, and scholars around the world is testimony to our commitment.

At this moment, it is ever more important that we channel our concerns and uncertainties into action and share that vision of hope with others.

Sincerely,

Stephanie A. Urchick

Well done to Issa and Jerry (his mentor). Freedom and opportunity awaits.

A huge congratulations to Issa for passing his driving test! 🚘

Issa passed his test on Monday and is incredibly grateful for the support of L2P. He shared that he couldn’t have done it without the help of his mentor, Jerry. This was Jerry’s first time mentoring a learner through the program, so both were thrilled to make it through on the first attempt!

A massive thank you to Jerry and all our amazing volunteer mentors who make such a difference in the lives of young drivers.

This is Slavenia, our ROMAC patient from Dec 2024 who hails from East Timor. She had an interocular device implanted in each eye to treat her severe glaucoma. She went home just before Christmas and has been receiving followup treatment and care.

Dr Bernadette has shared that
Slavenia is doing very well, her intraocular pressure is very well controlled. She still has her medication there, she has sent her last photo after the recent follow up.

Well done to Ruquiyah and Eric her mentor on getting through the test so well.

We are really excited about the launch of 'In a Heartbeat' which has been researched and written by celebrated author Rachel Jayne Cassidy (and a member of the club). The book includes stories of Australians (and includes PP Terry and PP Kevin's stories).
We are attending the launch of the book this Friday at the Victorian Heart Hospital in Clayton.

During the Christmas season, we do a number of low key projects that seeks to help young people and families to have a happy Christmas time. We partnered with the Brunswick Salvos with JB Hifi vouchers and Chromebooks (laptops) to provide some festive cheer. Here is PP Terry O'Meara with Mel from the Salvos with an armful of vouchers and computers (on the ground).

We’re celebrating a major milestone for the Merri-bek TAC L2P Program—200 learners have successfully gained their probationary licence over the past 15 years! 🎉

This achievement wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our partners: Rotary Club of Brunswick Tullamarine, Sutton Tools, AGA, Asuria Australia, Transurban and Merri-bek City Council. Your contributions have helped young drivers gain the experience they need to hit the road with confidence.

A huge shoutout to our dedicated L2P volunteer mentors, whose time, patience, and guidance empower learners on their journey to independence.

Want to make a difference? Join the Merri-bek TAC L2P Program as a volunteer mentor and help shape the next generation of safe, capable drivers.
