The VMLCG is a non-traditional landcare group in the sense that we are not focused on one geographic location or one environmental entity like a wetlands or a creek system. We started out in a specific 4WD club as family members who wanted to undertake our recreational interests but also put something back into the community through environmental work in the bush. Landcare provides an excellent w
ay for us to use our vehicles and other bits of technology (computers, GPS, digital photography, mapping) to assist traditional landcare groups undertake their projects - or as we do also, conduct our own projects, especially into remote areas of Victoria where there are no traditional landcare groups operating. In this sense, we are fortunate to enjoy and create a wide variety of projects for our members - we work on projects removing cactus, do surveys for Malleefowl presence, remove sallow willows in the Alpine National Park, check for Quolls in Gippsland, remove sea spurge at Cape Otway, look for turtles, do rubbish collection in national parks, open tracks up for Parks Victoria, replace fire damaged signs in remote national park areas, plant trees (so far) in East Gippsland, Ballan, Werribee Gorge, Ararat, Yarram - and we are planning many more trips and projects. We've worked with Grow West, Project Platypus, Parks Victoria, DSE, East Gippsland Environment Network, Otways Environmental Network, Upper Goulburn Landcare Network, Victorian High Country Huts Association, Friends of Clover Arboretum (Bogong), Fintona Girls' School, Lalor Secondary College, Friends of Werribee Gorge and Long Forest Gully (whew!), TreePlant, Baynton Sidonia Landcare group - and others. You do need a passion for doing landcare, a sense of humour, a sense of commitment, an ability to get on with people from 15 - 70 odd - and a passing interest in the Internet because we keep our overheads as low as possible by using the Internet as our channel of communication and collaboration. So, if you are interested, head to our web site at https://www.vmlcg.org.au - and connect with us!
