We are PBO registered IT1544/2021 (D) and provide “Section 18A” certificates for tax. We started Redhill Animal Rescue (RAR) to try and help the animals of the Redhill informal settlement when Covid lockdown started in March 2020. Families already struggling to feed their children were often unable to feed their pets. This was planned to be only a short project, but instead has expanded exponentially. It now encompasses not only feeding, providing shelter, assisting with illnesses, vaccinations and sterilisations of pets but providing education and support to the children of Redhill.

It’s puppy season in Redhill !

🐾 We met several new puppies on Tuesday, each one cuter than the last.

None of them has a name yet, their families are still deciding, and we’ll tell you as soon as they’ve made up their minds !

🐶 Whenever new puppies arrive, we register them with their owner’s name and address, so we can follow them as they grow.

We also take care of their vaccinations to protect them from viruses. And once they’re old enough, we’ll book their sterilisation.

This is what the inside of our van looks like on a Tuesday morning pet food run !

🐾 Dog food (250kg) and cat food (90kg), packed into bins on each side of the car to make distribution easier.

We stop twice in Redhill (the Library and Camp D) and once in Dido Valley, every two weeks, rain or shine !

🐶 Residents know the routine and come meet us for kibble, wet food, and sometimes a vaccination or tick treatment for their animal too.

We don’t receive any government funding or subsidies, we keep this work going thanks to donations from our network.

Meet Mave and Archer 🐾

🐈 Mave arrived in her new home deeply shaken.

She spent her first few days hiding under the bed, too scared to be touched.

Her new family got her a little tent to retreat to, and slowly, she’s finding her courage.

She’ll now let you stroke her and explore the house with her person close by, though she still ducks back into hiding when anyone else walks in.

One step at a time.

🐈‍⬛ Archer had a home he loved for years, until his person had to relocate to the Eastern Cape and couldn’t bring him along.

He stayed on in Redhill until his house was taken down as part of the move to Dido Valley, so our team stepped in to find him somewhere new.

Calm, affectionate, and endlessly patient, he’s settling in well.

🐾 Mave and Archer haven’t met each other yet, they’re each easing into their new world first. We’ll keep you posted on how they’re doing.

Meet Tiger,

🐾 Phaphama’s brand new puppy, and quite possibly the most independent-minded little girl on the team right now.

Phaphama is part of the team, you should know her by now, and this week she added a puppy of her own to the family.

On Tuesday Tiger had her first vaccination, a deworming treatment and a flea treatment, the care we give to every new puppy in Redhill and Dido Valley in order for them to grow up healthy.

🐶 RAR runs entirely on donations.

We receive no government funding, so every vaccine, every pill, every treatment happens because someone out there decided to help.

🐶 Most animals bolt from the camera or look anywhere but at it, not her!

Always ready to strike a pose, and we swear she’s smiling every single time too.

It’s International Dog Day, and at Redhill Animal Rescue, we try our best every day to make that the case !

🐾 Dogs have a way of forgiving fast and loving harder than almost anything else out there.

❤️ The dogs we work with in Redhill and Dido Valley have often had a rough start, but most of them still greet people with a wagging tail and zero grudges.

That’s worth celebrating today and worth remembering the other 364 days too !

Tuesday mornings at RAR look a little like this, a full car, bags of kibble everywhere, and Siyabonga making it all look easy.

😻 He’s the one hopping up onto the sacks to open them one by one as we unload, then carrying everything over so we can split it into crates ready for distribution across Redhill and Dido Valley.

❤️ Siyabonga has been with RAR since the very beginning, and honestly, we don’t know what we’d do without him.

🐾 Beyond the kibble runs, he translates for residents who aren’t confident in English, and works alongside Phaphama to remove stitches after sterilisation surgeries, and that’s just scratching the surface of everything he does for us.

Some of the most important work happens quietly, one bag at a time.

This little guy lives right next to Siyabonga, but somewhere along the way, he decided life is better at the creche.

🐾 His own armchair, an audience of adoring kids, and snacks on demand.

Who could blame him ?

So Mutti has now unofficially (okay, maybe officially) become the creche’s guardian dog.

The children are thrilled, his actual owner ?…Not so much !

Meet Limo, short for “limousine.”

🐾 His owner in Redhill named him that because, well, he’s a dachshunds / sausage dog, and dachshunds are famously long.

😂 Somewhere between a dog and a car, apparently.

We couldn’t stop laughing when we heard the story on our rounds, but honestly ? The name fits perfectly !

🐶 What do you think, good name for him, or does he need a new one?
