On behalf of the Breadline Africa team, our donors and partners, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Mbali, Jabu, Queen, the staff and children of Bright Morning Star Educare Centre, as well as Mama Doris’s family, friends and wider community.
Mama Doris Khoza saw a need in her community and answered it with love.
In January 2017, she opened Bright Morning Star Educare Centre because she could not bear to see young children wandering the streets. Where others saw hardship, she saw children with futures worth fighting for.
Our journey with Mama Doris began in January 2019 during a site assessment visit. From that moment, we saw her deep commitment to creating something better for the children in her community.
In July 2019, that vision became reality. Together with True North and the generosity of long-standing Breadline Africa donors and partners, we handed over new classrooms, a kitchen and toilet facilities. Doris stood there filled with gratitude and emotion, tears of joy marking a moment she had worked so hard for.
When COVID arrived in 2020, she reached out again - not for herself, but to help feed children, parents and the wider community during one of the hardest times many families faced. Service was simply who she was.
In October 2024, we gathered once more with True North to hand over another classroom, an office and a sickbay. That day, Doris quietly said: “Trust and obey, cause there is no other way, cause God can make things happen.”
Humble, gentle and deeply dedicated, Mama Doris carried a kindness that touched every child and all those fortunate enough to know her.
We at Breadline Africa salute you, Mama Doris. Thank you for the love, care and hope you poured into hundreds of children’s lives. Your impact will continue through the many young lives you helped shape.
The Brightest Morning Star now shines in heaven.
Phumla kahle, Gogo Doris. Your footprints remain in our hearts.
