Fashion, music, laughter, community, what a way to wind down in Sierra Leone!

As volunteers and national crew in Sierra Leone wrap up the field service, they hosted a fashion show at the HOPE Center for patients and caregivers to enjoy an evening of joy together.

The crowd cheered on as patients and caregivers strutted their finest streetwear and African threads across the stage.

The has just wrapped up her third consecutive field service in the beautiful country of Sierra Leone!

The ship's departure marks the ending of a special season of partnership, but the impact and relationships formed will continue far into the future.

Thank you to the countless people who have played a role in bringing hope and healing, and thank you to the government and nation of Sierra Leone for graciously hosting and trusting us for the last three years.

“I had never seen a child with cleft lip before, it was the doctors that explained it to me.”

Kadiatu was faced with uncertainty after giving birth to twins, one of which being Almira, born with a cleft lip and palate.

Hearing about Mercy Ships from local doctors, Almira’s parents brought her to the Global Mercy, taking the first step in her healing journey.

Before the first patients arrive and surgeries begin, there is always a moment to pause and pray.

Recently, crew from the Africa Mercy gathered at the HOPE Center (Hospital Outpatient Extension Center) in Madagascar for an evening of worship and prayer, lifting up the patients who will soon walk through its doors and the teams preparing to serve them.

In just a few days, this space will welcome patients beginning their surgical journeys. Until then, we pray for peace, strength, and hope for every life that will be impacted this field service.

Dr. Michelle White, the new Chief Executive Officer of Mercy Ships, is no stranger to the organization. A pediatric anesthesiologist by background, Dr. Michelle started her journey after hearing about Mercy Ships as a medical student. Years later, she came to serve as a volunteer: two decades later, she has taken the helm.

Bringing more than 20 years of experience as a medical and executive leader across clinical, academic, and global health domains, she’s uniquely positioned to lead in this new season.

Recently, the welcomed back more than 250 Malagasy national crew members for orientation as we prepare for a new field service in Madagascar. From the hospital and OR to deck, hospitality, and departments across the ship, each person plays an important role in making this mission possible.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to partner with our Malagasy colleagues once again. Thank you for helping bring to patients and their families.
