At Finca Bellavista all homes and structures have a biodigester which is an eco-friendly alternative to a septic tank. The biodigester system processes human waste and grey water in a way that prohibits ecosystem contamination. 🐝

To do this, they use anaerobic bacteria to break down sewerage and wastewater. The liquid byproducts are then filtered and are often absorbed by the soil without causing harm to the environment. 🦠

The Finca is entirely off grid in its operations.
The power from the sun generates all energy used by means of a photovoltaic solar system. Future needs are planned to be met through combining solar and hydro assets.🔅

There is a requirement for houses at Finca Bellavista to be built on stilts so that animal migration can occur naturally. 🏠

Most of the food consumed is grown on site or sourced locally. This is to minimize the community’s footprint on the ecosystem as much as they can. 🥗

The Finca Bellavista is a sanctuary for anyone who loves being in nature. It may not be fancy, but it has what is needed to live a simple lifestyle while also being near to hospitals, shops and restaurants. 🦎

Although it’s a space for humans to dwell, there is strong stewardship of the land that is implemented in every decision that is made. Their focus is to have as little impact on the environment as possible and doing everything full of consciousness, caution and care. 💚🌳

Through our exploration of Lynedoch eco-village, we learnt that a self-reliant community focused on using renewable energy to minimize the burning of fossil fuels is possible.

This week, we move on from the Sustainable Institute’s eco village and discover Finca Bellavista, a treetop community within a rainforest in Costa Rica.

Being the first of its kind in the world, it is a place where guests and residents reconnect with nature and fully experience the rainforest.

Responsible resource management in Lynedoch is seen as a part of creating a regenerative future. 🌍

To manage waste the whole community needs to participate by separating waste at source into recyclable, food waste or landfill waste streams. ♻

The village also aims at using renewable energy. Having solar geysers as well as gas stoves has helped to reduce fossil fuel generated energy use by 70%

The Lynedoch eco-village is a place where visitors and students can reflect, connect and imagine a more just future. The village is orientated around nature and child-centered schools. This demonstrates a self-reliant, ecologically designed urban system that prioritizes affordable housing and enables ownership. 👥🌱

Soul, Soil, and Society. This is the vision of the Sustainability Institute that established the Lynedoch Eco-Village. This village is made up of a variety of eco-friendly buildings of either adobe (mud and straw) bricks, steel framing as well as wood.
It is not only the buildings that are diverse, people from all different backgrounds and cultures live and work together which reverses the segregation that still lingers in South Africa.
The villagers have a constitution in place to assist them with the problems they face daily. Their intentions are good, but it is still hard work. When there is an issue that needs to be addressed, residents get together and talk through it and find solutions. Despite their arguments at times, they still choose to live and grow together. 🌿🤝🚶

From Zingela Ulwazi we learnt that a holistic way of living will result in whole, happy and healthy communities. This is what we need to cultivate to live meaningful lives connected to the land.

We will explore this further through four holistic projects creating examples of self-reliant communities. The first example being a project by the Sustainability Institute in South Africa, which began developing an eco-village in 2006.
Not only has it been running for 20 years, but it is also South Africa’s first fixed race, mixed income eco-village! 🏡🌿🌍

Zingela Ulwazi, that we looked at last week is located near the Krugar National Park in South Africa, so we thought it would be fun to share some facts about the Krugar National Park before going into another solution. Happy learning! 🌍🌿👣

The outcome of the constant efforts of Zingela Ulwazi are reflected in all the projects they run. From 10 Trees to their self-defence classes for girls and women, they are seeing the transformation from harmful patriarchal patterns to better forms of communication and harmony among family members and communities.
More than that, people are beginning to love their gardens, and therefore the land. Participants not only learn a range of new skills, but also ways to reduce stress. This in turn helps them live happier, peaceful lives. 🏡👣
