The conversations happening across our country are difficult, but they are necessary.
Gender-based violence does not exist in isolation. It affects women and children, families and communities. It affects the places we call home and the sense of safety we should all be able to experience within them.
At SALT Projects, we believe meaningful change starts close to home. It starts in the communities where we live, where our children grow up, and where people need to know that they are supported, valued and seen.
Through the work we do in Du Noon and surrounding communities, and through initiatives such as Isidima and our school feeding programmes, we are reminded every day that stronger communities are built through care, dignity, opportunity and people looking out for one another.
Meeting an immediate need matters. A meal matters. A safe space matters. Someone listening matters. But creating a safer future asks something of all of us.
It asks us to teach our children that respect matters.
To speak up when something is wrong.
To listen without judgement.
To look out for the people around us.
And to refuse to accept violence as normal.
Let’s keep the conversation going, not only when the headlines are loud, but every day.
Because safer communities do not happen by accident.
They are built through the choices we make, the way we treat one another, and the courage to care.
