“When [Emerency!] premiered, there were 12 paramedic units in all of North America. In the next three years, 46 states enacted laws that allowed paramedics to practice emergency medicine. Within 10 years, more than half of all Americans were within 10 minutes of a paramedic rescue or ambulance unit.”

Emergency! advanced our industry more than just about any actual paramedic has. The show was instrumental in demonstrating to lawmakers that prehospital care was not only possible, but necessary to improve patient outcomes. Even after the show ended, Randolph Mantooth was a steadfast advocate and spokesman for EMS-related organizations.

We’ll take it from here, Johnny.

He partnered with real-life pal Kevin Tighe (Roy DeSoto) on the popular NBC series, then did lots of soap operas.
