At ArtsWorcester, we believe that contemporary art—the art made here and now, of all kinds and traditions– is fundamental to a vibrant, educated, and diverse city. Art shapes and enriches individual lives, while contributing substantively to social, economic, and civic development. With the arts now a key part of our city’s vision of its future, ArtsWorcester’s mission—engaging artists and the public to advance and celebrate contemporary art–becomes more crucial.

In our Future Art Workers (FAW) program this year, high schoolers from across Worcester Public Schools designed and produced the full-scale ArtsWorcester exhibition 'Change: A Juried Exhibition,' selecting just 38 artworks from 130 submissions to be featured. The resulting showcase highlights changes in people, places, and society that resonated with the group.

The students were responsible for every aspect of the exhibition, including installing the work and picking prize selections. Through this experience, they learned to express and justify their opinions, cooperate with others, and more wholly understand the behind-the-scenes work that make a gallery exhibition possible.

ICYMI, check out this article from the Worcester Guardian detailing their experience: https://theworcesterguardian.org/f/worcester-students-take-the-lead-at-artsworcester-exhibition/

'Change' will be on view for just one more week, through June 21, during gallery hours: Wednesday through Sunday, each day from 12pm - 5pm. Always free, and open to all.

The Future Arts Workers described Amber Vallaincourt’s painting 'American Hate' as “strong, visceral imagery” of the current cruel deportation of immigrants. “News we often only hear about nationally hit very close to home as Worcester’s Eureka Street experienced ICE raids just last year,” reflected the FAW. The message resonated with the students, who selected the piece as one of three prize winners in the exhibition.

The FAW, a group of thirteen arts administration apprentices at ArtsWorcester, selected the theme for this exhibition, wrote the call, produced the show, juried the submissions and installed the artwork. See the exhibition in its entirety in the third floor Davis Art Gallery at ArtsWorcester. 'Change' remains on view through June 21 during gallery hours: WED - SUN, each day from 12pm - 5pm. Always free, and open to all.

This weekend, experience 'Lithological' and 'Expanded Bodies' through the eyes of the artists. A gallery tour led by Bridey McGlynn and Caitlyn Marsh will invite guests to learn more about each of their processes and inspirations (with plenty of time for questions!).

Bridey's collection 'Expanded Bodies' is the result of the artist's pursuit over the past three years to develop a deeper understanding of painting and the relationship between herself and her body. She collaborates with her body to create open, abstract imagery that references the contours and marks of her own form.

Caitlyn's collection 'Lithological' is a series of angular, monochromatic sculptures showcase the impressive abilities of clay, as well as the medium’s capacity to represent the natural behaviors of earth and rock from an abstracted human perspective.

Gallery Tour: Saturday, June 13 // 11 AM - 12 PM
ArtsWorcester // 44 Portland Street, Worcester MA
Free and open to all with RSVP // Light refreshments available
