We're hiring! Join the team that helps take care of Downtown Worcester.

Our Downtown Worcester Ambassadors are at the heart of the BID's operations, doing some of the most essential and visible work in our neighborhood.

Every day, in every season and all kinds of weather, our Ambassadors are out on the streets and sidewalks of Downtown. They keep our public spaces clean and welcoming, support local businesses, assist residents and visitors, and pay attention to the little things that make a big difference.

Right now, we're hiring for two part-time positions on our Ambassador team through our operations partner, Streetplus:

*CLEANING AMBASSADOR*

From litter collection and graffiti removal to sidewalk cleaning and other hands-on maintenance, our Cleaning Ambassadors help keep Downtown Worcester looking its best. They're also a familiar, friendly presence for the people who live, work, and visit here.

*COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AMBASSADOR*

First piloted by the BID several years ago, this seasonal role provides an additional presence Downtown during evening and overnight hours (Thursday–Saturday, 7 pm-1:30 am). Community Engagement Ambassadors connect with businesses, residents, and visitors; offer information and assistance; conduct business and property check-ins; and help identify and address quality-of-life concerns.

It’s A Week Without Driving! 🚲👟🚌🚆

This is a chance to rethink how we get around, notice what works, and pay attention to the barriers people who don’t drive navigate every day.

Consider this your invitation (and maybe a little challenge) to make a car-free Downtown trip: come for dinner, a show, a library visit, work, or even just to walk around… and leave the car at home.

Downtown Worcester has options for getting here and getting around: fare-free WRTA buses, Union Station and rail connections, Metro Mobility e-bikes at the WRTA Hub, bike racks, and blocks where you can walk from one stop to the next in just a few minutes.

Whether you try one trip or go all-in on a whole car-free week, we’d love to hear: How do you get to and around Downtown? What did you notice? What new ideas did it give you? 🤔💭💡

Downtown is one of Worcester’s essential cultural hubs. It’s home to the Theatre District and The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts, the JMAC PopUp and BrickBox Theater, ArtsWorcester, Technocopia, plus public art ranging from large-scale murals and sculptures to artist-designed utility boxes, and a wall-to-wall calendar of festivals, exhibitions, and performances. Just beyond the BID boundaries, Mechanics Hall, the Worcester Palladium, DCU Center, and Off The Rails Worcester make the ecosystem even richer.

The City’s current Cultural Plan, adopted in 2019, set priorities that still matter to Downtown Worcester: affordable housing and artist live-work spaces, creative use of vacant storefronts, more public art, and more programming in public spaces.

But Downtown’s needs and opportunities look different today, and this is a chance to say clearly what we want next. To us, that means:

• A more visible, connected arts and theatre district
�• Artists who can afford to live, create, exhibit, and open businesses Downtown
�• More public art and cultural programming
�• A Downtown where Worcester’s creative community can build sustainable careers

🏙️ There’s a lot that goes into keeping downtown Worcester active, welcoming, and looking its best.

On this edition of Chamber Exchange: The TV Show, Tim Murray sits down with Katelyn O’Brien, Executive Director of the Downtown Worcester Business Improvement District, to talk about the work happening throughout downtown.

From hanging flower baskets and BID ambassadors to events like Out to Lunch and Movies on the Common, the BID works year-round to support downtown businesses, bring people into the neighborhood, and create a better experience for everyone who lives, works, and visits downtown.

The The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts’ THT Rep is bringing Shakespeare’s iconic Romeo + Juliet to the BrickBox Theater at the JMAC, located at 20 Franklin Street, with performances now through Friday, October 11!

Downtown Worcester is looking for the next great ideas to light up Worcester Common this winter. ✨

The Downtown Worcester BID is once again collaborating with the City of Worcester, Massachusetts to bring lighting installations to Downtown for the 2026–27 Festival of Lights & Winter Lighting Program. We are currently seeking proposals for creative, durable outdoor installations and public art that will bring warmth, wonder, and a real sense of place to the heart of Downtown from December through February.

Last winter, the Common featured pieces including “Allium” by Everything Good Studio; “Kinetic Perspective” and “Waves” by Spain-based Juan Fuentes Studio; and a temporary heart installation created by the Create 508 youth cohort, on display at the Festival of Lights. In prior years, the program has also included “Illuminaciones” by Boston-based Zebbler Studios and “Pillars of Monumental Truth” by Worcester’s own Fractaltribe, among others.

These works make people pause, gather, explore, take photos, and experience Downtown Worcester a little differently during the darkest stretch of the year.

And, if we may say so ourselves, no neighborhood in Worcester owns holiday lighting quite like Downtown. That’s something we’re proud to keep building on—and we’re always looking to outdo ourselves. 😉

Artists, designers, fabricators, creative studios, and collaborative teams: if you have a bold idea for the Worcester Common, we want to hear from you. 👀

The party has officially moved INDOORS at the Main Library, so come stay dry and enjoy food trucks, carnival games & prizes, an artisan market, community resources, face painting, and more!
