A Difficult Decision & Message from Hickory.

Today, we have some very difficult news to share.

After a great deal of thought, discussion, and heartbreak, we have made the decision to close all intakes and begin downsizing our rescue significantly . This is not a decision we ever wanted to make, but at this point, we truly believe it is the best decision for the animals in our care.

For a long time, we have been struggling behind the scenes to keep everything going. Our rural location has made adoptions extremely difficult, and it has also made finding and retaining reliable staff incredibly challenging. With limited staff, we have struggled to give our dogs the amount of socialization, exercise, networking, exposure, and individual attention they need to help them find homes.

Financially, things have been equally difficult. Veterinary care, medications, food, facility expenses, and the many other costs that come with caring for animals have continued to increase, while our ability to bring in the funding needed to sustain everything has not kept up.

Most importantly, we have reached a point where we have to acknowledge that trying to continue operating at our current capacity is not fair to the animals.

Some of our dogs have been with us for years. Sadly, we are seeing some of them decline in ways that break our hearts. Long-term shelter life has taken a toll on some of these dogs, and we know that several may not be the easiest placements. They may need experienced adopters, specialized homes, rescue partners, fosters, or simply someone willing to give a dog who has waited far too long the chance they deserve.

We need help.

As part of downsizing, we urgently need to find placement for multiple of our dogs sooner rather than later. We will be sharing their stories, personalities, needs, and information individually in the coming days.

If you are able to adopt, rescue, transport, network, sponsor, or simply share one of these dogs, please know that your help could quite literally change a life.

We also want to ask for your patience with us.

We are extremely short-staffed and have an enormous amount to handle as we work through this transition. We will do our best to respond to messages and questions as quickly as possible, but we may not be able to respond immediately. Please understand that there are only so many of us trying to manage everything right now.

Effective immediately, we are closing ALL intakes. We will not be able to take in additional dogs, cats, or other animals, and we will not be able to assist with animals in need from the community until we have gotten through this transition and determined what comes next.

We know this will be disappointing to many people. It is heartbreaking for us, too.

We have spent years trying to help as many animals as possible, and making the decision to step back is incredibly painful. But continuing beyond what we can realistically and responsibly manage would not be putting the animals first.

Our priority now is the dogs already depending on us.

We want to give them the best chance possible, especially those who have spent years waiting for a home and those whose quality of life is beginning to suffer from long-term shelter living.

Please don't give up on them.

Please watch for their individual posts. Share them. Tag rescue organizations. Talk to friends and family. If you can adopt, please consider doing so. If you are a rescue that may be able to help with one of our dogs, please reach out.

We may be downsizing, but we are not giving up on the animals who are still counting on us.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us, donated, volunteered, fostered, adopted, shared our posts, or simply believed in what we were trying to accomplish.

And most of all, thank you for understanding that sometimes loving animals means making the incredibly painful decision to step back and make sure the ones already in our care receive the attention and care they deserve.

Large cat colony needs assistance URGENTLY 🚨🚨
Roughly 20-30 cats, many being kittens need vetting asap to stop them for breeding and making the current situation worse. Some of the cats are already pregnant again.

Our goal is to help get as many cats fixed as possible. They will be TNR’d.

This is why we always say to Save them, we must spay them and currently that is what we need help doing.

Everyone has been waiting for this announcement. Well, the waiting in finally over! Our cat spay/neuter clinic will be held September 22nd and 23rd only. We are going to try to get as many cats spayed or neutered as possible in those two days! Some quick reminders: all cats must come in a carrier, or a cage and spots are by reservation only!

🚨 ANIMAL SAFETY ALERT: Dangerous Heat This Week! 🚨

With temperatures soaring into the low 90s and heat index values projected to pass 100°F over the next several days, our pets are at extreme risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Dogs don’t sweat like we do—they rely on panting to cool down, which becomes much harder when the air is thick and hot.

Please take a moment to read and share these critical safety steps to protect our community’s pets.

🐾 Protect the Paws: The 7-Second Rule

Asphalt and concrete trap heat and can get shockingly hotter than the actual air temperature. When it is 85°F outside, asphalt can quickly reach 125°F—hot enough to cause severe, agonizing burns and destroy skin tissue on a dog’s pads within 60 seconds.

The 7-Second Test: Place the back of your bare hand firmly against the pavement. If you cannot comfortably hold it there for 7 seconds, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.

Shift Walk Times: Walk your dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when the ground has had a chance to cool.

Stick to Grass: Avoid sidewalks, parking lots, and paved trails. Keep your walks strictly on grassy surfaces.

🚫 Critical Heat Rules

NEVER Leave a Dog in a Car: Not even for "just a minute," and not even with the windows cracked. On a 90°F day, the inside of a vehicle can spike to 109°F in just 10 minutes and hit 124°F within a half hour. It quickly becomes a lethal oven.

Limit Outdoor Time: Keep outdoor bathroom breaks brief. Heavy exercise, fetching, or running should be completely paused until the heatwave breaks.

Provide 24/7 Shade & Water: If dogs must be outside for short periods, they need access to completely unobstructed shade and fresh, cool water

Beginning July 1, 2026, Kansas communities will have a new tool to address feral cat populations humanely and effectively. A law signed by Governor Laura Kelly on April 9, 2026, officially decriminalizes the return of feral cats to their outdoor homes after they have been trapped, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated through Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) programs.

The new law removes legal uncertainty that previously surrounded TNVR efforts under Kansas animal cruelty statutes. Shelters, rescue organizations, animal control professionals, and community members and partners can now use TNVR programs without fear of prosecution, thereby reducing feral cat populations and improving animal welfare outcomes.

Kansas Pet Advocates worked with TNVR organizations, shelters, rescues, and animal control professionals to educate lawmakers on the benefits of TNVR and its proven effectiveness as an evidence-based approach to community cat management.
