It was a beautiful and cooler morning for the 50th De L’Indian De’Asptt Orleans. The course was mostly flat with gorgeous scenery. We ran distances from 5K, 10K, and half marathon with several achieving PRs. Run Wichita presented special statues to the winners. The evening ended with a reception including a medal presentation from Sister Cities and Dalton Glascock. Great job to all!

Run Wichita Takes on the Loire River!
What a beautiful day exploring Orléans, France, on two wheels! Our Run Wichita group traded running shoes for bicycles and enjoyed a scenic ride along the Loire River, taking in historic architecture, charming villages, and beautiful fall scenery. Plenty of laughs, great company, and unforgettable memories along the way. Sometimes the best way to explore is to slow down and enjoy the ride!

Bonjour! 🇫🇷 Today we explored the beautiful Loire River Valley, visiting two incredible chateaus! Château de Chambord, the largest in France, is famous for its grand architecture, spiral staircases, and for housing priceless artwork like the Mona Lisa during WWII. After lunch on the grounds, we visited Château de Cheverny, a stunning estate that has remained in the same family for over 600 years! We wrapped up our countryside adventure with a w**e tasting at Maison des Vins de Cheverny. A wonderful day of French history, architecture, and w**e! 🍷🏰

Today on the Run Wichita Orléans trip, pen pal letters were delivered to a local English class. Then we started the day with a guided visit Orléans where we learned of the history and transformation of Orléans, including buildings that were centuries old, a Jean d’Arc statue, still showing marks from WW2, the Hôtel Groslot, and a very special tour of the Cathédral St. Croix where we were honored to be invited to climb to the rooftop between the towers. The general public is not usually allowed up there. Later, back to the same cathedral for a light show that was absolutely incredible to see.

This post is a bit delayed, but we made it to France!

After landing in Paris and grabbing a quick Starbucks recharge, we boarded our buses and headed straight to our hotel in Orléans. Once we checked in, we were treated to a wonderful "Pot de l'Amitié" where board members, the Mayor's office, and ASPTT staff gave us the warmest welcome. We are already so amazed by the culture and architecture here, and we can't wait to see what the rest of the trip brings!

We are all familiar with the Keeper of the Plains in Wichita, and you've probably seen little models of it around town. Did you know that some of these statues are not in Wichita or even in the U.S.? One of them is in a city called Orléans in France. A long time ago, during World War II, some American soldiers from Kansas helped free Orléans from the N***s. They formed a special bond with the people there. In 1973, Wichita and Orléans officially became "sister cities”. Not long after, Wichita gave one of the Keeper of the Plains statues to Orléans, and it now sits in a park there. This year marks the 50th anniversary of two big events. One is a yearly race in Orléans called the "Courses de l'Indien," which celebrates the statue and the friendship between the two cities. The other is the 50th birthday of Run Wichita! So to celebrate both anniversaries together, a group from Run Wichita will fly to Orléans to join in their city’s celebrations. We'll run in races on Sunday, October 18 (5K, 10K, half-marathon), and we’ll also get to see some sights and have fun exploring! Follow our journey on our socials!!

valeriemo76 joined Run Wichita in 2023 looking to change up her running routine, discover new routes and connect with other runners. What she found was a welcoming community—and plenty of opportunities to give back. She has volunteered at Prairie Fire, Wichita Turkey Trot, Super Bowl Run, Moonlight Madness and Exploration Place parkrun, taking on roles from gear check and packet pickup to course monitoring and race lead. This month, Valerie will take on another important role as the lead driver for the Prairie Fire Marathon. Her experience as both a runner and volunteer gives her a unique perspective on everything that goes into making race day special.
