Did you know? Tacoma Needle Exchange offers advanced drug checking services! Whether you’re unsure about what you bought or buying from a new source, our drug checking technicians can analyze samples of your drugs to help you figure out what you’ve bought so you can make informed decisions about your use. Drug checking is just one tool in the overdose prevention toolbox. Remember to carry and know how to use naloxone so you can respond in the event of an opioid overdose. Knowledge is power, and knowing what’s in your drugs can help you stay safer. ❤️💉🫂
Interested in getting your drugs checked or learning more about the process? Stop by our Pacific Ave office on Tuesdays (12PM-6PM) and Thursdays (10AM - 3PM) to learn more!
Visit TacomaNeedleExchange.org to learn more about this and other services available at TNE.

Overdose prevention is community care. Anyone can integrate overdose prevention strategies into their routine. This might look like…
• Carrying naloxone
• Using with people you trust, or calling a safer use hotline
• Getting your drugs checked
• Having conversations with your community about the supply in your area
• Using new supplies each time you use

August is Overdose Awareness Month.
This month, we make space for grief and remember the people we have lost: our friends, family, partners, neighbors, and community.
We hold space for everyone who is grieving, knowing there is no timeline and no “right” way to grieve. Grief can be tears, laughter, a story, a photograph, a song, a treasured memory, or simply carrying someone’s memory with you.
These are not numbers to us. They are people we knew, people we loved, people who mattered, and people whose lives left an impact on our communities.
We grieve. We remember by sharing their stories, carrying their memories forward, and keeping each other alive.

On this day in 1988, our friend and founder Dave Purchase set up his card table and started a movement. Tacoma Needle Exchange became the first legally sanctioned syringe exchange program in the US, and 36 years later, we’re still advancing Dave’s mission of providing harm reduction services to the people of Tacoma and Pierce county. Dave would go on to found the North American Syringe Exchange Network (NASEN) in 1992, creating a national counterpart to his local work.
Thank you to all of the staff, friends, allies, advocates, and participants who have helped TNE thrive over the years. We are honored to carry on Dave’s legacy in his hometown over three decades later. In Dave’s own words: “The point is the point.” ❤️🫂💉

With Pride Month in full swing, we wanted to take some time to share some tips to stay safer.

Start low and go slow: Give yourself time to feel whatever substances you’re using. Tell a friend if something doesn’t feel right.
Carry naloxone: Having naloxone will help you and other Pride attendees be prepared to respond to an overdose.
Stay cool: Remember to drink water throughout the day and take breaks to rest in the shade so you can stay cool and celebrate all day.

You can catch us at Tacoma Pride on Saturday, July 11! Visit TacomaNeedleExchange.org to learn more about our services, and stop by our office for all your harm reduction needs. 🫂🌈
