Washington State PTA Founded in 1905, WSPTA is the largest volunteer organization in the state, with over 80,000 members.

Washington State PTA was founded in 1905 by Abby Williams Hill of Tacoma, an artist who saw the need for an organization to support Washington's children. Thanks to her leadership and vision—and that of thousands of parents and teachers who have carried her vision forward—Washington State PTA has been a leading voice for children in Washington for over 115 years.

Today, we honor and recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

We take this day to reflect on and honor the Native peoples, families, and communities whose histories, cultures, traditions, and voices have always been, and continue to be, an important part of our shared story.

At Washington State PTA, we recognize the strength, resilience, and lasting contributions of Indigenous communities. We also recognize the importance of listening, learning, and showing respect, not just today, but every day.

Participation in Programs and Grants: Can a PTA Require Membership?

Let’s consider the question of whether a PTA can require staff to be members in order to qualify for classroom grants. The short answer to that is NO, and requiring it would jeopardize the PTA’s tax-exemption. Hello!

We are hosting our first ever Washington State PTA Essay Prompt Contest!

Every year, the PTA runs an essay contest open to Kindergarteners through 12th Graders, giving them a chance to share their ideas, creativity, thoughtfulness, great ideas, and their writing skills. Through this contest, we aim to inspire and encourage creativity in young minds across the state.

This year, we are introducing another contest to accompany the essay contest – the Essay Prompt Contest! In this contest, students tell us something they would like to write about – a prompt for the actual essay contest. From September 1 to October 12 at 10:00 PM, students can send their ideas for a thoughtful, creative, deep, and interesting prompt to be selected. If their prompt/theme is selected, they will receive a $25 Amazon Gift Card and be honored at the student programs celebration! There are separate categories for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. From each category, the top 3 prompts will be selected.

This season, Michelle is most thankful for the dedicated volunteers who work alongside her to make PTA programs successful.
