Bayou Land Conservancy

Bayou Land Conservancy Bayou Land Conservancy is an accredited land trust that has permanently protected over 14,000 acres of Houston's natural habitat.

We conserve land along streams for flood control, clean water, and wildlife. Bayou Land Conservancy permanently protects wetlands and other ecologically valuable habitat through partnerships with willing landowners. We preserve land for wildlife habitat, flood mitigation, and enhanced water quality. Our programs connect the public to nature through recreation, education, and stewardship.

As the hurricane season approaches Reliant Energy would like to remind you to bring loose, lightweight objects inside that could become projectiles in high winds (e.g., patio furniture, garbage cans); anchor objects that would be unsafe to bring inside (e.g., propane tanks); and take some time to trim or remove trees close enough to fall on the building.

Our friends at Reliant Energy have some tips for what you can do to reduce your carbon footprint this summer and help our Texan environment: follow the 4-by-4 rule: if no one is going to be home for more than 4 hours, set the temperature 4 degrees higher while you’re gone. It will make a bigger impact than you think!

🔥🌱 Check out these photos from a prescribed burn at Cindy’s Redbud Nature Preserve!

For generations, Indigenous peoples and landowners, like Ray Audas and Cindy Martin of Redbud Preserve, have used controlled burns to reduce wildfire fuel, suppresses invasive species, and encourage healthy native plant growth.

During this burn, Ray and his team treated 20 acres, bringing the total burned at Redbud Preserve to approximately 125 acres. When we returned in spring, the prairie was thriving again – native plants were already reclaiming the landscape and emerging with vigor. 🌼

Come on out this Saturday, May 30, 2026, to explore the Lawther-Deer Park Prairie Preserve at their open house! Its a great chance to learn about the ecological heritage of the Houston region. The recent rain should make for a great showing of prairie plants and flowers. Don't forget your mud boots, and come say hello to BLC!

📍 Deer Park, Texas
Deer Park Prairie will be open to the community for a day of guided prairie exploration, native plant and wildlife activities, citizen science, and evening mothing with the Moth Posse. Explore the prairie alongside Master Naturalists and Houston Chapter volunteers, contribute to a community BioBlitz, and experience one of Texas’ most biodiverse remnant coastal prairies after dark during mothing activities.
Protected by Native Prairies Association of Texas, this 51-acre coastal prairie preserve is not regularly open for public access, making this a rare opportunity to visit and experience Deer Park Prairie up close.

⚠️We need your help to stop a proposed development in one of the most flood-prone areas in the Houston region. The Scarborough 5300+ acre floodplain development, which is upstream from Lake Houston between Spring Creek and the San Jacinto West Fork.

Experts warn that if this land is developed, it would be like “aiming a firehose at Humble and Kingwood.” This is a critical moment for our community.

Please take a moment to sign the petition. Every signature adds pressure to reconsider this project.

Happy Earth Day!🌎

Today we’re celebrating the people who make every day feel like Earth Day at Bayou Land Conservancy—our incredible volunteers!

Because of you, trails are built, habitats are restored, invasive species are removed, and more people in our community can connect with nature. Whether you’re on a committee, getting your hands dirty, leading a bird walk, or supporting our mission, your impact goes beyond a single day.

We truly couldn’t do this important work without you. Thank you for helping protect and preserve the places we all love! 💚
