Be Peace - Be Hope

Be Peace - Be Hope WHY ARE WE COMMITTED TO SERVE? Today, our students face many challenges, are hurting and struggling.

We empower K-12 students, teachers and parents by nurturing their strengths and well-being through comprehensive life skills training and mindfulness and art practices, addressing social and emotional pressures in their educational environment. We provide at-risk, low-income, minority students (including refugees and new immigrants) and their teachers the social and emotional Learning workshops an

d in-class programs to develop leadership and self-reliance competences so that they can become contributing members of the community. Since 2015, we have been seeking to directly address the negative social, emotional and environmental factors that have impacted students throughout Houston in low-income, under-served and at-risk communities, and that have continued to contribute to their trauma, disengagement, delinquency and academic failure. These young students usually do not have the skills to deal with these challenges including problems at home such as lack of resources or support to challenges at schools such as bullying, racial inequity, structural violence …etc. and are overwhelmed by the emotions generated by these challenges. The Be the Peace - Be the Hope platform and programs provide these skills to students ages 7 to 22, and their teachers. The results are changed lives that domino into the family and often through many at the school and in the community.

Innovation becomes meaningful when it helps people thrive. 💡🌱

Last Thursday, we had the privilege of attending the first InnovatED Meet-Up at The Cannon Houston, bringing together educators, innovators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders committed to shaping the future of education.

The conversation between Christopher Mayes, CEO & Superintendent of Wonderland Inc. and Beatrice Mayes Institute, and Jon Lambert, CEO of The Cannon & Tandem, was both inspiring and deeply connected to the work we do every day.

Their insights highlighted something we strongly believe: education is not only about delivering information. It is about creating environments where young people can grow, connect, discover their strengths, and access the tools they need to succeed.

As we continue building EsperHope, our interactive platform designed to support socio-emotional well-being, life skills, and personal growth, these conversations remind us why innovation matters.

Technology becomes powerful when it strengthens human connection, expands access, and brings meaningful support into schools and communities.

We are grateful to Naeem Vehvaria, Founder of UpWita, and his team for organizing such a thoughtful gathering, and to Rochelle Brown-Anderson and Be Ingenious for hosting and facilitating such an engaging conversation.

A special thank you as well to Dr. Sunny Zhang for introducing us to this amazing group and helping create new opportunities for connection and collaboration through Born Global.

One of the most valuable parts of the evening was the opportunity to connect with so many passionate leaders who care deeply about creating positive change. We left energized, inspired, and excited about the possibilities ahead.

We look forward to continuing these conversations and exploring future collaborations that help bring innovation, well-being, and opportunity to more schools, families, and communities.

Because when innovation is rooted in human connection, education becomes a force for hope. 💙

Yesterday, we had the privilege of attending the Dialogue & Luncheon on Child Mental Health in a Digital Environment, organized by the Rupani Foundation, Ibn Sina Foundation, and Rupani Development Initiatives at the beautiful Ismaili Center.

It was a meaningful opportunity to listen, learn, engage with important perspectives, and reconnect with dear friends around a topic that matters deeply: how we create safer, healthier environments where children can truly flourish.

The conversation drew from UNESCO’s international bioethics work on ethical considerations for youth mental health in digital environments, and it reminded me that children today are growing up in physical, digital, educational, and social spaces that profoundly shape their well-being, identity, relationships, and sense of belonging.

The question is no longer whether these environments influence mental health.
They do.

The question is whether we are intentionally designing them to protect, nurture, and strengthen children’s well-being.
Every decision matters.
Every classroom.
Every digital platform.
Every policy.
Every program.
Every community space.

As adults, educators, healthcare professionals, nonprofit leaders, technology developers, and policymakers, we have a responsibility to ask:
Is what we are creating truly in the best interest of the children we serve?
Does it help them feel safe, seen, valued, and connected?
Does it strengthen their resilience, confidence, and ability to navigate challenges?
Does it protect their dignity and support their mental health?
At Be Peace – Be Hope, these questions sit at the heart of everything we do.
Our mission is not simply to help children overcome challenges. It is to help create the conditions where they can thrive, develop life skills, build emotional intelligence, strengthen resilience, experience belonging, and grow with hope.
Mental health is not only about addressing problems once they appear.

It is about building environments, relationships, systems, and opportunities that help young people flourish long before they reach a crisis.
Our children deserve nothing less.

Thank you to the Rupani Foundation, Ibn Sina Foundation, Rupani Development Initiatives, and all those who contributed to this important conversation. The future of our children depends on the choices we make today.

💛 International Children’s Day

Every child deserves more than an education.

Every child deserves to feel safe.
To feel valued.
To feel heard.
To know that their voice matters.

Childhood is a time of discovery.

A time of curiosity.
Imagination.
Growth.
And learning who we are in relationship with ourselves, others, and the world around us.

Over the years, we have had the privilege of walking alongside incredible young people as they explored their creativity, built meaningful connections, strengthened life skills, and discovered strengths they may not have known they possessed.

We have witnessed courage.
Kindness.
Resilience.
Leadership.
And the extraordinary potential that emerges when children are given the conditions to thrive.

At Be Peace – Be Hope, we believe every child deserves learning environments that nurture not only academic success, but also emotional well-being, confidence, belonging, purpose, and hope.

Because children do not flourish through instruction alone.

They flourish when they feel seen.
When they feel safe.
When they are supported by caring adults.
When they are given tools to understand their emotions, regulate stress, build relationships, and believe in what is possible.

Today, on International Children’s Day, we celebrate the children who inspire us every day with their creativity, perseverance, and unique perspectives on the world.

We are also deeply grateful to the educators, families, community partners, and mentors who help create the conditions where young people can grow, heal, lead, and contribute.

Because when children feel seen, supported, and empowered, they do more than grow.

They begin to imagine new possibilities for themselves, their communities, and the future.

And there is nothing more powerful than that. 💛

Today is National Say Something Nice Day.

Kindness is often thought of as something small.

But for someone who feels unseen, overwhelmed, discouraged, or alone, a few genuine words can make a meaningful difference.

A compliment.
An encouragement.
A simple, “I’m glad you’re here.”

Small moments of connection remind us that we matter to one another.

They help create belonging.
They soften the day.
They remind someone they are not alone.

💬 Today, leave a kind message in the comments for someone who may need it.

Your words may be the encouragement someone carries with them today. 💛

Creativity is so much more than making art. And yet, art can be a beautiful doorway into creativity.

Creativity is a way of expressing what is difficult to put into words.
A way of exploring emotions.
A way of building confidence.
A way of discovering new possibilities.

Over the past several years, we have had the privilege of witnessing incredible creativity from the young people we serve.

Through painting, sculpture, storytelling, collaborative projects, and imaginative expression, students have shown us their courage, their perspectives, and their unique gifts.

Every artwork tells a story.

Sometimes it reflects joy.
Sometimes curiosity.
Sometimes resilience.
And sometimes, simply the human need to be seen and heard.

At Be Peace - Be Hope, we believe creativity helps create spaces where young people feel safe to explore who they are, connect with others, and develop the skills they need to navigate life with confidence and hope.

Today, on National Creativity Day, we celebrate the imagination, talent, and voices of all the students and the teachers, including Christian Perkins who have shared their work with us.

Thank you for inspiring us every day. 💛

Because when creativity is nurtured, confidence grows.
And when confidence grows, possibilities expand.

💛 A Morning of Inspiration, Dialogue, and New Possibilities

Yesterday, Karine Parker-Lemoyne, Erica R. Contreras and Neo Garnier had the privilege of visiting the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston, a beautiful space dedicated to peace, nonviolence, understanding, and the power of positive change.

A heartfelt thank you to Atul Kothari, Co-Founder, and Katherine Demsky, Executive Director, for their warm welcome, generous hospitality, and the meaningful conversations we shared.

As we explored the museum’s immersive exhibits and reflected on Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring message that lasting change begins within, we saw many natural connections with the work of Be Peace - Be Hope and our upcoming EsperHope learning platform, as well as the values we cherish through Rotary International and Rotary District 5890.
The visit reminded us that peace education, empathy, self-awareness, understanding, service, and community action are powerful forces for bringing people together and for helping young people strengthen well-being and become positive changemakers in their communities.

If you have not yet visited the Eternal Gandhi Museum Houston, we warmly encourage you to experience it. It is a deeply inspiring space for reflection, learning, and meaningful dialogue for students, families, educators, and community leaders.

We are excited about the possibilities ahead and look forward to continuing to explore future collaborations that help create spaces where hope, understanding, and human connection can grow.

Sometimes, one intentional breath can make more difference than we realize. ✋💙

Here is a simple grounding practice for stressful or overwhelming moments:

Five Finger Breathing

This gentle technique can help slow the nervous system, bring your attention back to the present moment, and create a small space of calm when emotions feel big.

Here’s how to practice:

👆 Trace up one finger as you breathe in.
😮‍💨 Trace down as you breathe out.
☝️ Continue slowly, one finger at a time.

No perfection needed. Just one breath, one finger, one moment of reconnection.

Save this for the next time you need to pause, reset, or come back to yourself. 💙
