September is Deaf Awareness Month. 85% of Deaf and hard of hearing children attend public schools. As educators in Washington state, we must create school environments that welcome and accommodate students who live with hearing impairment. Deaf Awareness month provides an opportunity to promote inclusion and assess how we can better represent and serve our deaf and hard of hearing students. Women’s Equality Day is Aug. 26, when we celebrate the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920. That made it illegal to deny citizens the right to vote based on s*x which was a step forward, especially for white women. It would take decades longer for Black women and other disenfranchised groups to overcome individual state laws, harassment and violence, and other racist barriers that denied them access to voting.
