Another deep dive. Does “preferred means” confuse you?

Opponents are treating a preference for hunting like some dangerous, untested experiment. But Colorado’s Title 33 has prioritized hunting, trapping and fishing for necessary wildlife harvests for more than 40 years.

Preferred doesn’t mean ONLY. Primary doesn’t mean ONLY.

So why give hunting and fishing a preference? Let’s talk about wildlife management, conservation funding, food, and the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation. There’s a reason this approach matters.

And here’s where the record gets interesting: representatives of several organizations now opposing Amendment 83 supported last year’s bill to remove that statutory priority.

They tried. They lost.

Now we’re being told hunting and fishing don’t need protection.

An ordinary statute is much easier to change than a constitutional protection. Amendment 83 goes beyond the existing statute, establishing a constitutional right and a management preference while preserving necessary science-based regulation.

They tried to ban hunting. Colorado voters said no.

Now some of those same people are telling us hunting doesn’t need protection.

And they’re doing it under a name that sounds like they speak for us: “Hunters Against 83.”

Okay. Then where are the hunting organizations?

Colorado Bowhunters. Colorado BHA. Ducks Unlimited. Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. They’re backing YES.

Fishing? The American Sportfishing Association’s letter has 127 companies and organizations supporting 83.

But we’re supposed to believe those groups don’t understand conservation? Or are promoting cruelty?

Follow the money behind the hunters-branded No campaign. Over a hundred eight thousand dollars from Wayne Pacelle’s Center for a Humane Economy, the organization whose own report says it helped create Cats Aren’t Trophies - The campaign behind the hunting ban voters just rejected.

And Mark Surls, who helped organize that effort, now tells us nothing threatens hunting.

Just a bit of a contradiction.

Another No campaign lists Pro-Animal Future as an endorser, with documented connections to Oregon’s IP28 effort against hunting, fishing, and ranching.

Putting “hunters” in the name doesn’t erase any of that.

They’re asking us to dismiss the threat while their own records show why we’re concerned.

This CBS Colorado piece lays out why it matters. Hunting and fishing aren’t just how many of us spend our weekends. They’re how Colorado manages its wildlife, and state law has named them the primary tool for that for decades.
Over the past two years, that’s been chipped away, with pushes to make hunting and fishing optional management tools and to ban specific practices one by one. Amendment 83 puts the right to hunt and fish in our constitution and keeps them as the preferred way to manage our herds and fisheries.
What it doesn’t do matters too:
It doesn’t touch nongame or endangered species
It doesn’t allow trespassing on private land
It doesn’t repeal any current law or regulation
It keeps the state’s power to regulate for science, safety, and future opportunity
Twenty-four other states already have a similar protection, and supporters point out none of them have seen existing restrictions thrown out.
Hunting and fishing also bring billions into Colorado’s economy, support thousands of jobs, and pay for habitat restoration and species recovery. Without 83, these decisions are left to shifting politics instead of Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
