IP28 is dead. The campaign is not. The bigger battle is not.

Three attempts. The last came closer than ever. But we've got more coming our way. More coming across the west.

THE LONG GAME looks at Oregon’s food, culture, ballot measures—and the bigger question of what comes next... For all of us.

SB 1305 IS DEAD.

Today, the California Assembly Appropriations Committee stopped SB 1305 — the bill that would have directed CDFW to create a roadmap evaluating grizzly bear reintroduction in California.

That is a win.

Not because we are against grizzly bears. Quite the opposite.

We opposed moving California toward an intentional reintroduction program without first confronting the realities of modern California: nearly 40 million people, enormous recreation pressure, working lands, existing predator conflicts, limited management tools, and serious questions about whether this would ultimately be good for the bears themselves.

There is also an important distinction between opposing this reintroduction proposal and opposing wildlife restoration. Reintroductions can be incredibly successful when they are biologically justified, supported by wildlife professionals, and undertaken in landscapes capable of supporting them.

We did not believe SB 1305 met that standard.

And thousands of you spoke up.

You emailed lawmakers. You shared the action. You made your voices heard.

Today, SB 1305 was stopped. It'll be back next year.

Take the win. These victories matter — and they are exactly why getting involved matters.

Thank you to everyone who took action.

WDFW 3 YEAR SEASON SETTING HUNTING RULE MEETINGS BEGIN TONIGHT

Washington hunters: WDFW is beginning a series of virtual meetings to discuss potential hunting rule changes for the 2027–2029 seasons.

After reviewing more than 1,000 comments from an earlier public feedback period, WDFW has narrowed the list to approximately 60 potential proposals.

Three informational meetings are scheduled:

August 11 — Ungulates
6–8 PM
Zoom Meeting ID: 831 3013 3384
Passcode: 189749

August 12 — Waterfowl
6–8 PM
Zoom Meeting ID: 850 6133 4781
Passcode: 825046

August 17 — Turkey, Small Game, Upland Birds, Carnivores & Furbearers
6–8 PM
Zoom Meeting ID: 857 2754 6773
Passcode: 077770

These meetings are informational only. WDFW will explain the proposals and answer questions, but formal public comments will not be collected during the Zoom meetings.

Here’s why hunters need to pay attention:

Groups and individuals opposed to hunting are already sharing information about this process and looking at these proposals through the lens of how they can be used to restrict or reduce hunting opportunities.

If hunters sit this one out, other voices will still be participating.

Take the time to listen. Learn what WDFW is considering. Ask questions. And then make sure you submit your feedback through the public surveys.

Don’t let other people decide the future of your hunting opportunities for you.

It’s Happening!
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission investigation report is currently still expected to be released this tomorrow.
We have experienced several delays throughout this process, but as of now everything appears to be moving forward as scheduled.
As you are aware this no action has been taken regarding the investigation, as of yet. But action is not required for the investigative report itself to be released.
We do not yet know what time the report will be provided to us, but our goal is to review it as quickly as possible and have it available by Friday evening, if we’re able.
From the records currently in our possession and what we have personally witnessed during Commission meetings, we believe the commissioners under investigation should have been removed long ago. If this report reflects the conduct we have observed and documented, we hope the Governor’s Office will act swiftly to hold those responsible accountable.
We also hope that political pressure, the financial influence of large donors, or threats from special interest groups do not interfere with government accountability.
We are expecting a substantial report, and we sincerely hope the investigator and the Governor’s Office conducted a thorough, objective review that accurately reflects what we all are aware has taken place within the WDFW Commission.
Once we receive the report, the full document will be available at ccofwashington.com, and we will also be sharing key findings and highlights as we work through it.
As always, we will keep everyone updated as soon as more information becomes available.
