Ever wondered what tortoises eat?  🐢🌿

Tortoises like our Ambassador Mohave stick to fresh fruit, veggies, and dried snacks

In California desert tortoises are herbivores, meaning their diet is mostly made up of native wildflowers, grasses, leafy greens, and cactus pads. Their favorite meals often appear after seasonal rains, when the desert briefly blooms with fresh vegetation.

These slow-moving reptiles play an important role in the ecosystem, helping spread seeds and maintain healthy desert plant communities.

Tiny tortoise fact: they can store water in their bodies for long periods to survive the dry desert climate! ☀️💧

How does being in nature make you feel?

There is something beautiful that happens when people slow down long enough to truly notice nature.

A bird building its nest, the way trees move in the wind, the tiny lives hidden beneath flowers and leaves.

When we learn to care for the natural world or even simply observe it with gentleness we often become softer with ourselves and each other too.

Love grows where attention is given, and sometimes protecting nature begins with simply learning to see it. 🌿

Visit discoverwildcare.org to see more about how you can observe wildlife and coexist with such wonders.

FOUND AN INJURED, SICK, OR ORPHANED WILD ANIMAL? 🚨

If you find wildlife in distress, call WildCare’s Living with Wildlife Hotline immediately:📞 415-456-SAVE (7283)

Helpful signs an animal may need rescue:
• An adult wild animal that allows you to approach is likely in distress
• A baby animal found alone on the ground usually needs help
• Exception: fawns (baby deer) and baby jackrabbits are often left alone temporarily by their mothers
• Baby birds with fluffy down or baby mammals whose eyes are still sealed shut need immediate care (except fledgling birds)

⚠️ Do not attempt to raise or treat wildlife yourself. Quick action and professional care can save a life.

If you'd like to know more about help desk protocols please visit our site at https://discoverwildcare.org/found-an-animal-faq/
