Malawi’s success in controlling HIV/AIDS demonstrates how strong leadership, partnerships, and data-driven coordination can achieve ambitious national health goals. GAIA’s latest white paper outlines how a Last Mile Primary Care Initiative would build on this progress by extending primary care to every community, improving health outcomes and supporting Malawi’s long-term social and economic development.

A historic run for Malawi CAF Women’s Football —and the record breaking Chawinga sisters, Temwa and Tabitha. 🇲🇼⚽

In the team’s inaugural appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Malawi has made an extraordinary run all the way to the final this Sunday at 12 p.m. PT.

And the journey has already delivered another major milestone: Malawi has qualified for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, earning a place on the world’s biggest stage.

GAIA is incredibly proud to support The Scorchers as they make history for Malawi, inspiring fans at home and around the world.

We’ll be cheering on Sunday! 🇲🇼

Big news from Malawi: three new Mobile Health Clinics have officially arrived!

Two of the vehicles will become mobile clinics in Nsanje District (opening next month!), and the other will allow us to retire one of our original clinic vehicles from 2009!

For nearly 20 years, GAIA’s Mobile Health Clinics have traveled the roads of Malawi, bringing essential primary healthcare directly to rural communities where distance can be a barrier to care.

Three new clinics. More communities within reach. More miles ahead.

Last week, the world’s leading HIV responders – scientists, activists, policymakers, and NGOs – convened for the 26th International AIDS Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Conference offered a platform to showcase GAIA's ground-breaking work to the global community. We were proud to highlight GAIA’s strengths at this critical moment: expanding access to hard-to-reach communities; operating in partnership with local government; integrating HIV services within primary care; and our success at Prevention of Mother-to-Child-Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.

Rethink. Rebuild. Rise.

The theme of the International AIDS 2026 Conference is a powerful reminder that innovation alone isn't enough—it must reach the people who need it most.

As Brazil's Minister of Health said during the opening plenary, "Innovation without access is injustice." International AIDS Conference

At GAIA Global Health, we're proud to help turn innovation into impact by expanding access to life-saving healthcare at the far end of the road in Malawi.

GAIA’s newest all-terrain ambulances – two headed to Nsanje District and one to replace the original clinic vehicle from 2008 – are ready for service, bringing lifesaving healthcare to remote communities. Over their 15-year lifespan, each vehicle could support 3,000 clinic days and 500,000 patient visits. While our medical staff are the heroes, these rugged Land Cruisers are essential partners on every journey. When Emmy lost her father and faced an uncertain future, she never gave up on her dream of becoming a midwife.

With a GAIA Global Health scholarship, Emmy completed her advanced midwifery training at Lusaka College of Nursing and Midwifery. Today, she is equipped to care for mothers and newborns, manage obstetric emergencies, and help prevent maternal deaths.

"The scholarship support really helped me to study midwifery. I gained knowledge on how to take care of pregnant mothers, antenatally, during labor, and post-delivery. I’m now competent enough to conduct deliveries and to manage obstetric emergencies; it’s all because of scholarship support. I’m able to pursue my studies freely, with nothing to worry about the resources." – Emmy

When we tell people about our work in Malawi, the first question is often simple: Where is Malawi? The next question comes just as quickly: Why Malawi?

What started as an emergency response to HIV/AIDS has become a long-term commitment to closing the gap in healthcare access.
