🎨 AWD Artist Studio Spotlight: Susan McCormick | Studio 7

Step inside the creative world of Susan McCormick, an oil painter whose atmospheric abstract landscapes explore color, mood, memory, and place.

Susan’s recent work grew from a series of tiny 4" × 5" oil paintings on birch panel. Working intuitively with a palette knife, she discovered a meditative rhythm—allowing familiar landscapes, memories, and emotions to emerge through layers of color and movement.

Those small studies now serve as inspiration for her larger paintings, where sweeping gestures of the palette knife invite viewers into landscapes that feel both familiar and imagined.

✨ Visit Studio 7 at Art Works Downtown and discover Susan’s work in person.

Marin Resident Moves Renowned Gallery to San Rafael – Marin Independent Journal

Marin resident Kim Eagles-Smith recently moved his gallery to San Rafael.

As unlike as they can be, two huge paintings lure visitors into Kim Eagles-Smith Gallery in San Rafael. One is a spectacular, whimsical, bright blue abstract by Gustavo Ramos Rivera. The other is a realistic oil-on-canvas titled "Point Reyes Barns #5" by Marin artist and IJ outdoor columnist Jeffrey Long. Storefront window attractions include rotund sculptures of cats by legendary sculptor Beniamino Bufano.

It all makes for a fascinating introduction to Kim Eagles-Smith's new gallery adjacent to Art Works Downtown in San Rafael. Earlier this year, the ebullient owner decamped from Mill Valley and relocated to San Rafael, following former Mill Valley gallerist Donna Seager. The move has contributed to the central Marin city's growth as an art destination, home to the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Falkirk Cultural Center, the Museum of International Propaganda and other galleries. San Rafael's more affordable commercial real estate, numerous eateries and coffee shops and ease of parking have all contributed to the exodus from Mill Valley.

(3 words): an art game of telephone — Artwork Highlight

Geometry of Daydreams, by Rebecca Szeto
2026, salvaged cardboard, paint, wood scrap, 9” x 9” x 6”

(3 words): Ephemeral, Natural, Transformative

Rebecca Szeto is a multidisciplinary artist and native San Franciscan. Geometry of Daydreams is a curated intervention on found paper collected during walks after the rain and is part of the series Rainy Day Fund. The work draws attention to the strange shapes and textures of experience, marked by the elements and memory. It reflects on littering, loitering, and the suspended animation between material death and the restorative spirit of creativity. In three words: This is hope.
