Why does art matter for children in our programs?

During a Blick creativity kit packing day, we asked some of our team members. Here's what they had to say.

500 children. 14 active sites. 15 shelter communities still on our waitlist.

Thank you, Maite Durán, a DrawBridge Community Artist, who led our intergenerational collage and storytelling workshop at the Albert J. Boro Community Center in San Rafael, bringing the Canal neighborhood together to imagine and build its future through art. We were so honored to have her.

A textile artist and Director of Raíces Del Canal, Maite’s practice is rooted in color, community, and the stories already living in a place. We’re grateful she brought all of that into the room with our kids.

Until next time. 🌿

Our facilitators spent the day in a Trauma-Informed Practice Training with Professor Jennifer Clay of Dominican University, exploring how art can hold space for safety, self-expression, and connection.

The group started with a collective healing circle, painting a shared piece together as a way of grounding and building trust. From there, the group moved into mask-making, exploring the difference between the self we show the world and the self we know inside.

This work shapes how we show up in every DrawBridge session, creating spaces where young artists feel safe, seen, and free to create without judgment.

Grab an old book and give it a whole new life.

Upcoming in September, DrawBridge and Marin County Free Library are bringing an Altered Books workshop to three branches. Kids will turn used books into something entirely their own, painting, drawing, collaging, and reworking the pages into personal art.

3:30-4:30pm at each location:
September 1 - Fairfax Library
September 8 - Point Reyes Library
September 15 - Corte Madera Library

Free and open to young artists in the community.

Creative expression is more than making art.

For children participating in our site programs, a weekly art group creates space to reduce anxiety, process difficult emotions, and build confidence, even without needing words to do it.

In a DrawBridge session, a child chooses what to make and how to make it. No instructions. No correct outcome. Just materials, time, and a trusted adult who shows up every week.

That consistency is the program.
