Kitchens for Good

Kitchens for Good We are a tuition-free culinary school offering training to jobseekers facing barriers to employment.

Kitchens for Good is a sustainability-oriented San Diego nonprofit dedicated to making a positive impact on our economy, society, and environment. The heartbeat of the organization is our three tuition-free Apprenticeship Programs – Culinary, Baking, and Foodservice Manager – which help individuals facing barriers to employment gain the skills needed to create sustainable careers. The program cons

ists of ~3 months technical and life skills training and career coaching on our campus in Linda Vista, followed by ~17 months of paid on-the-job training with one of our Employer Partners. In addition to acquiring dozens of requisite core competencies, Apprentices practice environmental stewardship with root-to-stem/nose-to-tail (whole ingredient) cooking practices, reducing use of plastics, and composting. To remove obstacles which might impact Apprentices’ attendance during the skills training, they receive weekly stipends to help cover costs while they are in class, transportation support, breakfast and lunch, and an unending supply of TLC. Holistic support services are available to Apprentices for the duration of the 20-month program. Our new social enterprise WORKS is a staffing solution which facilitates Apprentices’ transitions to their on-the-job training by providing comprehensive Human Resources as needed and significantly reducing onboarding costs for our Employer Partners. Our kitchenware resale SHOP accepts gently used kitchenware, cookware, dinnerware, and home décor items and resells them. Inventory changes daily, offering an eclectic mix of everyday staples, high end brand names, unique one-of-a-kind items, vintage treasures, and more – all at unbeatable prices! Proceeds from all sales go to support Kitchens for Good programs. Unwanted items are kept out of landfills and items that have been loved too much for us to resell find other homes, are repurposed, or recycled. We also work with a number of community partners to help educate San Diego on ways to reduce organic waste on an ongoing basis.

September is Workforce Development Month 👩🏼‍🍳

And we’re celebrating with a full-circle moment:
Maria went from KFG apprentice → San Diego line cook → KFG Instructor Assistant 🥹

At our Milestone Celebration in June, she told us: “I accomplished something. I finished something and I didn’t quit.”

Now she’s back in the kitchen helping the next generation of apprentices do the same.

Welcome back, Maria! ❤️

Hunger relief is back at Kitchens for Good. 🍽️

The need for food assistance in San Diego is growing…and we aren’t waiting for our new Culinary Impact Center to open to respond.

This month, Kitchens for Good is relaunching our hunger relief meal program in our current kitchen, providing nutritious prepared meals for San Diegans experiencing food insecurity while building toward the greater capacity our Culinary Impact Center will provide in 2027.

At the same time, meal production gives our culinary apprentices more opportunities to build real-world skills and experience in a professional kitchen.

With support from the San Diego Foundation’s San Diego Unity Fund, we’re building a program designed to grow with the need.

Some of our staff stopped by The Loma Club to see Carolyn, Josiah, and Carlos and honestly…just so good to see them out there doing their thing.

Carolyn said her favorite part is the people. Her chef even called her an “angel” and said she’s pushing everyone to work harder just by how she shows up.

Josiah said he loves the people too…and also that getting to wear a t-shirt and shorts at work is a win 😄

Carlos said he just loves getting to work hard…and yeah, you can definitely see it.

We are just really proud of these three!
