San Diego Zoo

San Diego Zoo The San Diego Zoo is operated by the international non-profit San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. https://SDZWA.org
(210912)

The 100-acre (40-hectare) Zoo is home to more than 3,500 rare and endangered animals representing more than 650 species and subspecies, and a prominent botanical collection with more than 700,000 exotic plants. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance (SDZWA) empowers people from around the globe to support their mission to conserve wildlife through innovation and partnerships. SDZWA supports cutting-edge

conservation and brings the stories of their work back to the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park—giving millions of guests, in person and virtually, the opportunity to experience conservation in action. The work of SDZWA extends from San Diego to strategic and regional conservation “hubs” across the globe, where their strengths—via their “Conservation Toolbox,” including the renowned Wildlife Biodiversity Bank—are able to effectively align with hundreds of regional partners to improve outcomes for wildlife in more coordinated efforts. By leveraging these tools in wildlife care and conservation science, and through collaboration with hundreds of partners, SDZWA has reintroduced more than 44 endangered species to native habitats. Each year, San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance’s work reaches over 1 billion people in 150 countries via news media, social media, their websites, educational resources and the San Diego Zoo Kids channel, which is in children’s hospitals in 13 countries. Success is made possible by the support of members, donors and guests to the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, who are Wildlife Allies committed to ensuring All Life Thrives.

Prowling into frame 🐆

Deep in the forests of Madre de Dios, Peru, trail cameras capture rare glimpses of jaguars in the Amazon rainforest. The team at San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance-Peru is using new technologies to transform how we understand and protect them, detecting species, classifying images, and turning massive amounts of data into actionable knowledge.

Tracking jaguar populations is a window into the health of an entire ecosystem, and by combining science and conservation, scientists can make faster, more informed decisions to protect biodiversity in real time.

Today, we were made aware of a potentially dangerous threat directed at the San Diego Zoo. Upon investigation, the San Diego Police Department determined it was a hoax and there is no active threat to guests at this time.

The safety and well-being of our wildlife, team members, and guests remain our highest priority. We appreciate the understanding and support of our community during this time.

Shellebrating the reintroduction of 15 baby southwestern pond turtles to their native habitat 🐢

In 2020, the Bobcat Fire destroyed critical turtle habitat in Southern California. Eleven southwestern pond turtles were rescued from the San Gabriel watershed and brought to the San Diego Zoo for recovery through a collaborative effort with incredible partners including the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), California Department of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service, and Endemic Environmental Services, Inc.

After years of habitat monitoring, these adult turtles were reintroduced to their native home.

In a turtle-y amazing turn of events, wildlife care experts discovered that the adult turtles had laid eggs while in our care. Now, those fifteen hatchlings have officially been reintroduced to the San Gabriel watershed, where they’ll help strengthen the population of California’s only native turtle species.

A stellar hatch to celebrate 🐣✨

The first-ever Steller’s sea eagle chick at the San Diego Zoo has hatched. Tiny but mighty, this little birb is growing strong under mom and dad's care. This chick may be small now, but adult Steller’s sea eagles are among the largest and heaviest eagles in the world, with wingspans that can reach up to 8 feet wide.

Seeing this chick thrive is a powerful reminder of the role conservation organizations can play in protecting threatened species and biodiversity for future generations.

Ernest at every age 🦁

This not-so-little lion and certified silly goose was born at the Safari Park in 2014, and has lived at the San Diego Zoo alongside his sister Ellen since 2019. Those who know him best know he’s a master of the dramatic flop, enjoys a good sun-soaked cat nap, and always finds a way to be the mane character.

Stop by the lion habitat on your next visit to the San Diego Zoo to see Ernest lounging, blepping, or possibly plotting his next playful moment.

Welcome to the Belle-ieber fandom 🫶

Belle the wombat is one special gal with a very dedicated wildlife care team at the San Diego Zoo. From nighttime foraging to trail camera check-ins and early-morning "dinners" timed just for her, every detail of her day (and night) is built around her routine. While the best time to catch her is right before closing, you might get lucky on a cool afternoon and find Belle soaking up a rare sunshine nap outside her burrow.

Magical misty mornings with Yun Chuan 🌧️

Giant pandas are right at home in all kinds of weather. In native habitats, they roam the mist-covered mountain forests of South Central China, where clouds roll in and the terrain shifts with the seasons. Yun Chuan's name translates from Chinese to "cloud" and "big river," pretty panda-fect for days like these.

Gorillas and orangutans and bonobos oh my 🦍

The San Diego Zoo has the honor of caring for three species of great ape: gorillas, orangutans, and bonobos. We’re dedicated to protecting great apes and their habitats through collaborative conservation efforts around the globe. From safeguarding gorillas in Cameroon’s Ebo Forest to supporting orangutans in Southeast Asia and advocating for bonobo conservation in Central Africa, we’re working with local communities and global partners to ensure a brighter future for these ape-mazing species.

Making an ele-sized splash 🌊

If you've ever seen elephants face off in a friendly tusk tussle, you may be seeing what's known as sparring, and it’s an essential part of elephant social life. At the San Diego Zoo, the bachelor group loves to spar, building strength, practicing important skills, and forming strong social bonds.

Nipho, the youngest male, often kicks off the fun, going toe-to-toe with the larger males like Sundzu. These playful moments build confidence, strengthen relationships, and show the elephant boys are thriving.
