At DEEP San Diego, we're helping young children and families build early literacy skills through our Preparing for Kindergarten initiative, focusing on empowering families with the resources, support, and training to feel confident as their child's first teacher.

Support through the Bright Futures & Ready to Learn grants helps us continue creating meaningful learning experiences for children across our community.

Together with . Seuss Foundation and Diego Foundation, we’re helping build strong foundations for lifelong learning.

Our hearts are with San Diego’s Muslim community following Monday’s attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

At DEEP, we believe every child and family deserves to grow up in a community where they are safe, seen, and valued — regardless of their faith, background, or identity. That belief does not waver in moments like this. If anything, it deepens.

We stand with our neighbors.

🎉 ¡Celebración! 1,000 Books Celebration is almost here — and we can't wait.

Over 340 families in southeastern San Diego have been on this journey — reading together book by book, bedtime by bedtime, car ride by car ride. And 100% of children whose families completed the program outperformed their peers in kindergarten and first-grade literacy assessments.

That's the power of a reading home. That's the power of this community.

Every book is a passport to somewhere new. We'll can’t wait to celebrate them! 📚✈️

This is why consistency matters.

Betsy Hall, Literacy Coach at Webster Elementary, put it simply: "Every kiddo at Webster K–2 is getting a SIPPS group at their level, three times a week. That wasn't happening before."

Now there's a common language. A shared structure. Mastery tests across the board. And kids running up on the playground asking — "Is today the day we get to see Ms. Ashley?"

That's what the Literacy Liberators program looks like from the inside. And it's exactly what we're scaling next year.

📊 Mid-point Data is in — and it's worth pausing on.

Students who received at least 20 Literacy Liberators sessions gained an average of 1.4 grade levels of reading growth.

That's not a rounding error. That's what happens when Science of Reading meets consistent, relationship-based instruction — delivered by trained community members who show up, session after session, for the same kids.

This is what we're scaling next year.

A longtime DEEP supporter just made a $50,000 matching gift commitment to our Literacy Liberators summer programming — and issued a challenge to our community to meet them.

Every dollar donated will be matched until funds run out. Your $50 becomes $100. Your $500 becomes $1,000.

This kind of investment isn't just generosity — it's a statement. It says that closing the literacy gap in southeastern San Diego is urgent, solvable, and worth betting on.

Last year, 94% of DEEP students showed measurable reading improvement — and English learners in our schools gained nearly a full year of literacy growth. Full funding means no child gets left out.

Will you join this supporter in making that possible?

Investment Analysis: According to Nobel Prize-winning economist James Heckman, every $1 invested in early literacy returns $7 in reduced special education costs, higher graduation rates, and increased lifetime earnings.

At DEEP, we're delivering on that promise: 94% of our students show measurable reading improvement. English learners in our schools gained nearly a full year of literacy growth. Reading proficiency in our partner schools has climbed from 28% to 34% — outpacing the district average.

This isn't charity — it's the smartest investment San Diego can make in its future. The data is clear.

This is what making literacy the #1 priority looks like.

One SDSU Literacy Liberator. One focused student. One moment of breakthrough learning happening right in the classroom.

Our college interns provide personalized reading support during school hours, meeting students exactly where they are in their literacy journey. Side-by-side with teachers, they're helping transform reading outcomes in Southeast San Diego elementary schools.

When we prioritize literacy with intentional, evidence-based support, every child has the chance to become a confident reader.
