San Diego Coastkeeper

San Diego Coastkeeper Protecting and restoring San Diego's rivers, streams, and coastline for the communities and wildlife that depend on clean water.

In 1982, Hudson River fisherman became concerned about the modern poacher: pollution. They started the first Waterkeeper organization in the United States, and proved so effective at protecting water resources that Waterkeeper organizations trickled throughout the country. Once established, we became the 15th Waterkeeper organization in the country and focused our efforts on local, community-based

advocacy. Today, San Diego Coastkeeper continues our role as the region’s clean water watchdog as we help to identify solutions to a new myriad of problems such as water supply challenges and urban runoff. We use community outreach, education and advocacy to empower San Diegans to guard their clean water and healthy ecosystem, relying on you to help us find and fix pollution hazards. Our team of scientists, activists, educators and lawyers work with our community and decision-makers to protect and restore fishable, swimmable and drinkable water in San Diego County.

This Wednesday, June 10, the public has a rare opportunity to ask questions & hear directly from USIBWC officials about the transboundary sewage crisis.

USIBWC is the federal agency that owns and operates the International Wastewater Treatment Plant and related infrastructure on the U.S. side of the border.

Despite the ongoing environmental and public health crisis, USIBWC has not hosted a public forum in nearly a year. That makes this meeting a critical chance to listen and speak up.

The Regional Board is a public agency — which means YOU can attend, listen, and submit public comments directly to officials and decision makers. We're calling on partners and community members to show up. Will you be there?

When: 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2026
Where: 2375 Northside Drive, Suite 108, San Diego, CA 92108 (remote option available)

Happy !

This year's theme from the United Nations, "Reimagine," challenges us to rethink our relationship with the ocean — not as something distant from our daily lives, but as an essential part of the air we breathe, the food we eat, the climate that sustains us, and the communities we call home.

Whether you're catching waves, exploring a tidepool, joining a cleanup, or simply watching the sunset over the water, we hope you'll take a moment today to appreciate all that the ocean provides and reimagine what it means to be a steward of its future. 🌎🐋✨

San Diego Coastkeeper's latest Annual Report is live!

2025 marked 30 years of clean water advocacy, and we spent the year in courtrooms, classrooms, and out in the field fighting for San Diego's waters.

From the Tijuana River to the state capital, our team showed up everywhere it mattered. Behind every lawsuit, water sample, and classroom visit are the donors, volunteers, and partners who make it all possible. Thank you.

Today, we filed a petition with the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board demanding accountability for the stormwater pollution caused by commercial and industrial facilities in our watershed.

Big-box stores, warehouse campuses, and auto dealers blanket our community with impervious asphalt — generating toxic copper and zinc runoff that flows straight into waterways. And for decades, they’ve gotten a free pass.

We, along with our Waterkeeper partners across California, are calling for the regulations these polluters should have had all along.

Last month, we published a blog taking a deep dive into San Diego’s sky-high water rates.

This month, we're covering what happened when a government watchdog started asking the same questions.

An independent review of the San Diego County Water Authority, the regional agency responsible for your water bill, was underway. Then, the oversight body (LAFCO) running the review voted to shelve it, without public input and against the recommendation of their own staff.

We're fighting back. San Diego Coastkeeper and a coalition of organizations have submitted a formal letter to LAFCO demanding they reverse course.
