Elementary Institute of Science

Elementary Institute of Science EIS provides an optimal environment for hands-on learning with eight labs, an auditorium, extensive technology equipment, and an outside play area.

The mission of EIS is inspiring a love of science and creating opportunity for diverse children and youth. / La misión de EIS es inspirar un amor por la ciencia y crear oportunidades para diversos niños y jóvenes. It embodies our conviction that the children in our community deserve the same tools and supports available to children in more affluent areas. EIS programs build strong science, technol

ogy, engineering, and math (STEM) foundations and connect children to learning opportunities and experiences that level the playing field. In addition, our programs provide comparable learning experiences for underserved students across an entire community at no cost to families or schools.

School is back in session!

A heartfelt thank you to the Farrell Family Foundation for their generous support of Steps-2-STEM!

This year, Steps-2-STEM is on track to serve 1,342 students across the Lincoln Cluster, bringing 20 hours of hands-on biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science to elementary schoolers who rarely get access to this kind of learning. The results speak for themselves: measurable gains in science knowledge, STEM identity, and student confidence.

As one San Diego Principal put it... “students return from EIS feeling like real scientists. That is exactly what we are here for”

None of this happens without partners who believe in the mission. Thank you, Farrell Family Foundation, for being part of our family.

2026 summer camps are almost complete! Check out what we have been up to! ☀️🤸‍♂️🎨

We’ve packed so much hands-on learning, field trips, and big smiles into our first two weeks. Here’s a look back at everything our campers have been up to so far:

Week 1 | Science of Sound 🎼
Campers kicked off the summer by diving into the world of sound and music. They explored harmonic geometry, got hands-on inventing their own instruments, and were inspired by a visit from a real music producer. The week wrapped up with an unforgettable field trip to City Heights Music School, where students tried their hand at drumming, keyboards, and mariachi!

Week 2 | Literacy & Social Sciences 🔬
Week two explored the power of storytelling. Students worked on reading comprehension and narrative skills, building their voices as young writers and thinkers. The week’s highlight was a trip to the San Diego Natural History Museum, where history and science came to life right before their eyes.

💬 Which week was your camper’s favorite? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Last Saturday was a BLAST!

Thank you to Ivy and Kiki at Because I Rock for bringing the mines to our front door! Our students ages 10-18, had the opportunity to learn about geology with a hands-on crystal mining experience. What made the experience truly special was the heart that the Because I Rock team puts into their work.

We highly recommend checking them out as they expand into San Diego!

Thank you so much to being a Steps-2-STEM sponsor!

Your support allowed for over 5,000 hours of hands-on activities in science, technology, and engineering. Over the 25-26 school year, more than 1,300 elementary students from Lincoln Cluster schools in southeastern San Diego will learn about chemistry, biology, engineering, and computer science in Steps-2-STEM. Thank you to San Diego Unified School District for supporting transportation to EIS and thank you to all eleven schools for participating!
