We had a great day of climbing at Staunton State Park. We were having so much fun even a local black bear wanted to join in. This was our first time climbing in the state park as a group and looking forward to more. We wanted to say a big thank you to Staunton State Park for making it so easy to get out and climb. Stay tuned for more front range climbing trips soon!

Baker report

Saturday 7/18 started at a surprisingly crowded trailhead meet up, after sorting out some of the group gear it was off through the forest and up to alpine meadows leading to Sandy camp. Sunday would start with leaving camp at 2:30 under clear star-filled sky’s aided by headlamps illuminating the Easton glacier under our feet. By 5:00 the soft glow of first light was enough to light the way. Hours later when most people would be comfortably enjoying a Sunday breakfast & coffee in their homes we’d step onto the summit plateau to be engulfed in sunlight atop the 10,786ft Mt Baker (Koma Kulshan). By dinner time we’d retraced our steps descended the 7500ft and 6 miles, packed up camp, and found our way to the local Mexican restaurant.

The summit provides a view of the North Cascades that feels it could never be truly captured in a photograph, the way one’s military experience can never captured in words, but is understood by our peers. The question remains; was it ever about stepping atop the summit? Or was it about the challenge, the experience, and the community we build along the way.

11 years ago, we accomplished our first major organizational goal: Summit Denali with a team of vets purely on our own power and expertise.

That expedition cemented our climbing and mountaineering programs of today. We grew our leadership and catapulted our program forward.

Hats off to the 2015 8 For 22 VetEx Denali Team. The experience of all the training climbs and perseverance on the mountain is what our program is made of.

Lots of trips coming this summer. Sign up on our upcoming events page today.
