In the picture above, the Arkansas River flows between the Sawatch Range and the Mosquito Range sitting between 5,000 to 7,000 feet in elevation with a valley floor that stretches 3 to 10 miles wide. This valley was not made from erosion; rather, the valley was subjected to tectonic forces that created an upwelling of Earth's mantle roughly 20 million years ago. Learn more about where our river receives it water and other factors that drive our flow in the monthly river report (link in our bio).

Say hi to the Arkansas River's natural engineer, the North American Beaver. Found along creeks, streams, wetlands, ponds, lakes, and rivers all across the state, beavers are a keystone species in riparian ecosystems. Their mighty dams provide critical habitat to aquatic species. Working around the clock, beavers can fell a five inch tree in about 30 minutes and feed off of the upper branches, leaves, and bark. Learn how Colorado conserves and manages beavers and how landowners can prevent beaver damage on CPW's website. Feel free to share your beaver tales in the comment section below!

Say hi to the largest herbivore in the Arkansas River Basin and Colorado's official animal, the Rocky Mountain big horn sheep. Located predominantly in steep and rocky terrain, you can find these majestic mammals along our basin in Brown's Canyon, the Big Horn Sheep Canyon, and the Royal Gorge. Keep your eyes peeled when recreating in the basin; the best way to spot them is by looking for their white butts! Learn more about the rams, ewes, and lambs through CPW. https://cpw.state.co.us/species/rocky-mountain-bighorn-sheep

In 2014 after 20 years of cleaning mining tailings and debris, Colorado Parks and Wildlife designated 102 miles of the Arkansas River, from Leadville to CaƱon City, as a Gold Medal fishery. CPW has designated 360 miles of waters in Colorado as Gold Medal waters; the Arkansas River holds the longest stretch and the majority (28%) of Gold metal waters found in our great state. Comment below and share your best Arkansas River fishing stories.
