With the mild weather and lack of snow, UAWV volunteers have been busy clearing trails already. On January 11, 13 trees were cleared from the Interlaken trail. On the 15th, a large tree was cleared from the Avalanche trail. Little snow makes the work easier, but we really need the snow!

On November 18, the UAWV volunteers were at it in the snow on Kroenke Lake trail. Large trees had been reported across the trail. They removed three trees. The fourth was a tree with a 30" trunk lying along the trail which they left until spring. However, they did cut all the branches off of one side, so that it can be easily passed.

The trail season is not quite over! On November 5, two UAWV volunteers headed for the Three Apostles Trail, which had not been checked for a few years. With their Silky saws, they cleared 21 trees. A few larger ones were left for a team with long saws, perhaps next year. This trail departs from the Lake Ann Trail and is the route usually used for climbing North Apostle and Ice Mountain. It is a beautiful basin, but rarely visited.

On September 27th, two UAWV members cleared the Stout Creek Lakes Trail of 21 large trees. It was just two years ago that UAWV crews, over four days, cleared a blowdown on the trail of 71 trees. Here are some pix including a couple of the lakes.

On September 7th, two UAWV volunteers hiked the Rich Creek/Tumble Creek 12-mile loop. In the process, they cleared 56 trees, most of them small aspen. On the 9th, a volunteer cleared a snaggle of four large trees on the Ptarmigan Lake Trail. Both trails are now both clear for their entire length.
The Ptarmigan Lake and Lost Lake trails have been adopted by UAWV, and UAWV is responsible for maintaining them. The picture is across the Tumble Creek drainage with West Buffalo peak in the background.

On 8/13, three UAWV volunteers built a new log crossing at water crossing #6 on the Three Elk trail. The crossing is at the back of the meadow, at about 11,200, where the trail continues onto the terminal moraine. Crossing has always been a dicey process. There are braided paths where hikers have tried to find the best place to cross...usually on unstable rocks.
Now the crossing is safe and sound.

On 8/4, two UAWV volunteers, the regulars, cleared 33 trees on Browns Creek trail between the falls and the lake. They hiked 12.5 miles and the work event lasted 11.5 hours, truly a long hard day. The pay-off was seeing two bull moose grazing the area near the lake. The Browns Creek trail is now clear from the trailhead to the end above the lake.

UAWV volunteers were at it again on 7/30. They cleared the Timberline Lake trail. There were some leaning trees cleared along the trail, but most of the work was done near the lake. There was a lot of downed timber along with the inevitable braided trails. Timber was cleared from the approach to the lake and along the south side of the lake to the west end. The braided social trails were closed off leaving a more organized walking trail. The work day was about 7 hours long and 22 trees were cleared.

Three UAWV members cleared a mammoth, multi-branched tree from the Highline trail on 7/21/25. The tree had been there for some time and it took a couple of hours for the team to get it cut and the trail cleared.
