When our scholars reflect on leadership, one skill keeps showing up in ways that résumés can easily underestimate: listening.

In interviews, networking conversations, team meetings, and first jobs, strong communication isn’t only about knowing what to say. It’s also about understanding another person well enough to respond with intention.

Listen for perspectives different from your own. Ask the follow-up question. Pay attention before rushing to prove expertise.

Technical skills can help someone enter a profession. The ability to make people feel heard and respected can help build the relationships that sustain a career.

When our scholars reflect on their journeys, we’re reminded that career development is about more than getting hired. Every internship, project, meeting, and first job is also an opportunity to shape the culture around us.

Communication, adaptability, and inclusion matter in a job market where early-career professionals are constantly learning how to work across teams, backgrounds, and perspectives.

As you build your career, pay attention to more than whether you belong in the room. Ask what happens because you are there.

Make the introduction. Invite another perspective. Notice who hasn’t spoken yet. Create the kind of workplace where people want to participate.

For more than three decades, Wallin has continued to learn, adapt, and strengthen the support surrounding scholars.

We’re honored to be a part of Please Be Good at Philanthropy by Jen Ford Reedy, a new book from the Bush Foundation that shares practical lessons from philanthropic work in action.

The Wallin case study explores how an effort that began with 20 scholarships at one Minnesota high school grew into a comprehensive model of financial aid, personalized advising, career development, and partnership.
