In a tragedy compounded by stringent immigration policies, a St. Paul family was forced to make the agonizing decision to send their daughter's remains home for burial alone. Kimberly, a Harding High School teen, died of carbon monoxide poisoning, along with her boyfriend Leàn. Rather than jeopardizing their asylum case, the family watched her burial on livestream.

A family faced an agonizing choice after their teenage daughter died: accompany her body to Mexico and give up their asylum claim or stay in the U.S. and miss her burial.

The Administration has quickly moved to engage multiple government departments in the accelerated deportation of migrant children. Using what many critics and sources say are cruel, illegal, and coercive measures to deprive immigrant children of their rights, the US government essentially is freely collaborating between departments to remove minors while trampling privacy and due process for the most vulnerable.

In an effort to associate immigrants with crime, the Administration has sent multiple people detained by ICE to Guantanamo Bay, a controversial US government prison and torture site for alleged terrorists. St. Paul resident, Adam Abdullah, who was pulled over and arrested by ICE in December 2025, has now spent weeks at Guantanamo Bay prison. Incidentally, Abdullah was legally in the US and had no criminal record, further illustrating the arbitrary nature of the decision.

Adam Abdullah has no criminal record, but the government is holding him at a military prison set up for terrorism suspects after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Over Labor Day, a Washington family's camping trip in the National Forest ended abruptly when they were accosted by ICE agents. Five family members were detained, as ICE worked with US Forest Service rangers to identify and conduct a midnight raid on the family.

In September, DHS declined to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador, allowing Salvadoran TPS holders to remain in the US legally, for now. It is unclear what the future holds, though, leaving many in limbo and uncertain about how to plan their lives.

The Trump administration declined this week to terminate TPS for Salvadorans, even though it has done so for people from other countries like Haiti and Syria. But it also hasn't said whether it will extend the protection in the future.

ICE Is Hiding Detainees From Their Lawyers, and Minnesota's Most Remote Detention Center Is About to Open

The Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) condemns ICE's decision to remove people with final orders of removal from its Online Detainee Locator System. This action erases thousands of people in custody from the one public tool families and attorneys use to find them.

"When the government holds a person and refuses to say where, that is not immigration enforcement. That is disappearance," said Julia Decker, ILCM's Director of Public Policy and Public Affairs. The change makes this fall's opening of the 1,600-bed CoreCivic facility in Appleton, Minnesota even more alarming.

To the extent any person is detained by the government, their location should be immediately and accurately reflected by the government entity holding them. This change by ICE represents another escalation in the administration's bid to reduce transparency across the immigration system.

Earlier this month, ICE received permission to force-feed a Cuban man detained in Texas. A court quietly granted ICE the authority to conduct a non-consensual surgical procedure on the man who was hunger striking. Such actions have widely been condemned by human rights organizations as torture, and the details remain obscured by a system that allows for an untold number of abuses to be committed in the shadows.

ICE detained a mother and daughter who were receiving medical treatment at a Florida hospital after they were struck by an erratic driver on the highway. Grace Calero and Giulianna Carriel were both in the midst of receiving medical attention for neck injuries and psychological trauma when they were detained. The escalation of ICE activity in "sensitive locations" along with increased presence at airports has caused international outrage.

ICE arrested Grace Calero, 39, and her daughter Giulianna Carriel, 19, at a hospital in Florida while they were receiving care following a traffic accident.
