Mark your calendars for Candela’s fifteenth annual juried + invitational photo show, and first with our shiny new 501c3 status! ✨

The exhibition will be on view from July 1 through August 8th, presenting visitors with a survey of photographic processes and subjects from artists in all stages of their careers.

Our August 1 summer party, now entitled CANDELAFEST, is growing a bit to encompass fundraising for all of our programming, but will still acquire works for the Candela Collection AND award 2027 exhibition honorariums to 1-2 UNB15 artists.

Link in bio for more info and tickets to the party. Stay tuned for some mildly unhinged fried chicken themed party announcements.

Congrats again to this amazing lineup of artists! We’re so excited for this year’s show.

ON VIEW THROUGH JUNE 20: Nick Lenker () and Alma Haser ().

There are four weeks left to catch three outstanding solo exhibitions by Philadelphia based Nick Lenker and UK artist Alma Haser.

Nick’s “Parallel Projections” features a continuation of his project, IRL Objects. The photographic-ceramic hybrid process results in incredible faceted objects that reference pop culture, folklore, and art history while teetering between virtual and physical realities.

Alma Haser’s “Tired, Defeated, Warrior, in Love” is an ode, through text and image, to the realities of motherhood. Haser’s reputation for pushing the materiality of the image is on full display: silks of layered photographs and abstracted compositions of flesh and fabric showcase the passing of time with the tender and torturous. In the center of the room sits a small book of poetry made from the submissions of mothers that range from small joys to untold secrets.

Haser’s work continues into the back room with “Four Legs,” a series of small, ceramic chairs born from a desire to create outside of motherhood. Once completed, each unique chair is placed inside of a tiny tailored environment, then photographed and continuously layered to create the final image.

Haser will be joining Candela from the UK on Thursday, June 4th for a walkthrough of the exhibitions. RSVP via link in bio.

That’s a wrap on this month, so we’re taking a final look at our April Candelar feature, “Flower Cemetery” by Charlotte-based artist Nicole Driscoll ().

Nicole Driscoll is a multidisciplinary artist based in Charlotte, working primarily with photography and video. Her practice explores themes of identity, memory, and the emotional impact of personal and collective histories. She uses analog and experimental techniques to create layered visual narratives rooted in nostalgia and transformation. Her work has been exhibited at The Light Factory, Goodyear Arts, The Curated Fridge, and McColl Center.

In 2023, her photograph Hands in the Sky was selected by ArtPop Street Gallery for public display across Charlotte and in Times Square. Driscoll was awarded the Emerging Creators Fellowship in 2024 and participated in residencies at Mudhouse (Greece) and Walkaway House. Currently, she works as a teaching artist at Studio 345, a free, after-school art program, and as a freelancer in the great Charlotte community.

Stay tuned for additional 2026 Candelar artists throughout the year!

OPENING FRIDAY MAY 1ST:

Candela is excited to welcome back artists Alma Haser () and Nick Lenker () for exhibitions that push and blend the photographic object.

In the front gallery, Philadelphia artist Nick Lenker returns with fresh photographic ceramic works from his series, IRL Objects. Lenker applies found imagery to the surface of his geometric ceramic objects, which combine lore, iconography, and the mundane to playfully question ideas of reality and identity.

In the second gallery space, UK-based artist Alma Haser’s first solo exhibition features grand silks, small prints, and thoughtful texts that invite viewers into the intimate, shifting states of motherhood: Tired, Warrior, Defeated, In Love. Through raw, playful imagery, the project explores the layered physical and emotional realities of motherhood, challenging idealized narratives by revealing it as chaotic, tender, and deeply transformative.

Haser’s work continues to extend beyond the simple image in Four Legs, a series of unique ceramic chairs shown alongside photographs of the objects. The series began as a practice for the artist to unwind, resulting in a (still growing) set of small chairs. Through the repetitive act of crafting these miniature objects, she was able to “create a world where you can set the rules and design a space that is entirely your own,” providing a sense of control among the persistent chaos of the every day.

Stay tuned for announcements about special programming with Alma Haser during her visit to the gallery in early June. Both exhibitions will be on view through Saturday, June 20.
