There's lots to see and do at VMFA, from special exhibitions, collections that span the globe and the history of creative achievement, two restaurants, a not-to-be-missed shop, talks and programs that make the art come alive, and so much more! As of Oct 1, VMFA was certified as a Virginia Green attraction. It means we make recycling available, minimize the use of disposable food products and print

ed materials, reduce solid waste, use water efficiently, and conserve energy. But most importantly, it means we are always working harder to be better stewards of the environment. Don't forget to do your part!

Two paintings. Two feelings. One setting. 🪟

These paintings by Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard are connected, as Bonnard was influenced to choose windows as a subject due to a famous series of window paintings by Matisse.

While Matisse's "Interior" creates a sense of reflection and isolation, Bonnard's "The Open Window" depicts the change of seasons through color, light, and mood.

👀 These two paintings are currently on view in the Mellon European Art Galleries.

2️⃣ "The Open Window," ca. 1919, Pierre Bonnard (French, 1867–1947). Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon

Anybody else racing to the beach this summer? 🏖️

🏇 This tranquil scene is a representation of thoroughbreds exercising on a beach in France. The location is very likely Deauville in Normandy—a seaside town that was a popular holiday resort for members of French high society at the time Princeteau made this painting.

👀 "Race Horses on the Beach" is currently on view in the Mellon European Art Galleries.
