Thrive Birth to Five Committed to ensuring families have access to quality, affordable childcare, we serve as the designated lead for Ready Region Central, covering 17 localities.

Thrive Birth to Five (formerly Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond) is a partnership among public and private agencies, businesses, and individuals serving the cities of Richmond, Colonial Heights and Petersburg as well as Chesterfield, Charles City, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, New Kent and Powhatan counties. The partnership works to enhance the quality of early childhood care and learning for young children. Smart Beginnings Greater Richmond is one of the first Smart Beginnings coalitions in the Commonwealth, established in 2006. Now housed at the Greater Richmond Chamber Foundation, the initiative is a partnership among public and private agencies, businesses and individuals working to enhance the quality of early childhood care and learning for young children, so they will be well-prepared to enter the workforce.

📣 Big news for Virginia families and employers!

Virginia is launching Ready Together VA, a new Employee Child Care Assistance Program designed to help employers support the cost of childcare for their employees! 💙

Created through legislation passed by the 2026 General Assembly and signed into law by the Governor, the program received $25 million in state funding in the budget adopted June 29, 2026.

will work alongside employers, Ready Regions, child care providers, and community organizations to shape a program that works for both families and businesses.

🌱 Our goals are to:
✨ Combine public and private funding to expand access to affordable child care.
✨ Learn which approaches work best to inform smarter, more effective programs in the future.

At Thrive Birth to Five, we know that access to child care supports children’s development, strengthens families, and helps businesses and communities thrive. We’re excited to see Virginia exploring new ways to make child care more accessible!
