Two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform and enforce that all enslaved people be freed.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth to honor those who fought before us. To celebrate Black history, Black joy, and the continued pursuit of justice.

Good Morning from Hillside Mini-Farm! In the last 2 weeks our little farm has started to bloom full force. We were even able to offer our community members native flower arrangements to give their mothers. Green Team had an amazing time with learning how to bird and identify different bird calls. In our birding session we were able to see and hear over 20 different species of birds! Brown-headed cowbirds, Canada geese , Osprey, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers were some of the birds we had the wonderful chance to experience through our binoculars!

It’s a big weekend for getting outside and giving back 🌱

We know there are a lot of great volunteer opportunities happening across Richmond right now, and we’re grateful to be part of that energy.

If you’re looking for a way to plug in, join us for the Cool the City: Community Tree Planting in Highland Grove. We’ll be planting trees in a new affordable housing community to help reduce heat, improve air quality, and build a greener neighborhood together. No experience needed.

We’re also hosting our Spring Planting Day at Hillside Farm this weekend, so however you choose to show up, we hope you’ll spend some time outdoors supporting community-led work.

🌱Join Groundwork RVA for Spring Break Adventures!!

Looking for something to do over spring break? We’ve got a series of free trips for youth, with all equipment and lunch provided. Just come ready to spend time outdoors and try something new.

👧🏽For youth 11 and under:
Monday, March 30 | 10am–1pm
Field Trip to the Science Museum of Virginia

🌳For youth 12+:
Tuesday, March 31 | 10am–3pm
Gillies Creek Park Mindfulness and Recreation Day
We’ll start with a mindfulness activity, then spend the rest of the day playing disc golf and checking out the BMX course.

🚵🏿‍♀️Wednesday, April 1 | 10:30am–4pm
Day Trip to Pocahontas State Park
We’ll spend the day mountain biking, fishing, and hiking the park trails.

Free to attend. Lunch and equipment are included.
