SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH, and we have a lot to celebrate!

Today, we start by introducing you to some of our amazing students, teachers, and tutors, as they share about the impact READ RVA is making on their lives.

We’ll be telling you more about our determined students and the important work we’re doing in adult literacy education all month long. We hope you’ll come along for the ride!

📚For the final installment of our Summer Staff Reads series, Program Coordinator Shilpa Mondkar is sharing a book that really made her think.

Shilpa recommends Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth, sharing that the book’s “voice in the head” concept, especially the subway train story, “completely opened my eyes to my own inner mental chatter.” She also found the book’s exploration of our identification with things to be “a huge reminder that you can’t find yourself through what you own.”

Her recommendation? Give it a read if you’re looking to quiet your mind!

☀️📚 READ RVA CEO Mary Graham’s favorite summer read was Kin, a thoughtful story about family, identity, and the complicated ties that connect us. She recommends it for the way the story invites readers to think about where we come from and who we become, and how the best books can make us see our own world a little differently.

And Mary isn’t the only one with reading recommendations! Her pup Winston gives The Art of Racing in the Rain five paws for its funny, heartfelt story of love, loyalty, and life through a dog’s eyes. He also recently finished A Gentleman in Moscow, which earned another five-paw rating for being “charming, cozy, and just the right amount of mischief.” 🐾

Her pick is The Bullet That Missed, the third book in Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series. Amanda recommends the series for its mix of British humor, light suspense, and heartfelt moments, and says she’d recommend anything Osman writes!

Last week, a READ RVA tutor accompanied one of our hard-working students at the Moton Museum in Farmville, the birthplace of America’s student-led Civil Rights Revolution. Under the pen name Anne Ford, she captured her experience beautifully. We love seeing our students learn and thrive! At this year’s Summer Celebration of Learning, READ RVA student Coretta Smith shared a powerful story of perseverance, growth, and believing in yourself. After years of feeling discouraged by her struggles with reading, Coretta found READ RVA and began building her confidence, strengthening her skills, and working toward her goals.

Today, she stands proudly as a student, a reader, and an inspiration to others. Coretta is pictured here with her tutor, Frankye Owens, who has supported her along the way.

As Coretta shared in her speech, “You’re never too old to learn. So, never give up on yourself or let someone tell you that you can’t achieve your goals.”

Thank you, Coretta, for sharing your journey and reminding our community what is possible when we continue to learn and persevere. 💙
