Volunteer Gayle Hollins and Program Coordinator Shilpa Mondkar represented READ RVA at the 2026 Community Resource Partner Fair for Child and Family Welfare Workers, while Program and Community Relations Manager Amanda Ritchie attended the annual Recovery Fair hosted by Pinnacle Treatment Centers.

Earlier this month, our CEO, Mary, attended Peter Paul’s Vision & Voice luncheon, featuring entrepreneur and philanthropist Devon Henry in a conversation about creating opportunities for Richmond’s East End youth.

Congratulations to the nonprofit of the year nominees and to the 2026 winner, the YMCA of Greater Richmond. Over the summer, READ RVA welcomed 20 new volunteer literacy tutors during our tutor training session! 🎉Each individual brings a diverse and valuable background that will greatly benefit our students. The training was hosted by READ RVA Programs staff and three of our dedicated teachers, Mary Frances Brown, Shilpa Mondkar, and Kelly Weber. We're so excited to grow our READ RVA community!

NATIONAL LITERACY MONTH IS COMING TO AN END, but there is still so much work to be done! READ RVA is the ONLY literacy organization serving adults in the greater Richmond community, and we need your help to continue this important work.

Over 100,000 adults in the Richmond area have low literacy skills. We are providing the framework and resources for adults to succeed, one deserving student at a time.

"I learned how to write letters. I wrote a letter to my friend's kids after my friend passed away."

This testimony, shared by one of our many thoughtful students, demonstrates that low literacy can be a barrier to some of the most "human" sides of life. Imagine not being able to send a card or letter to a grieving friend or family member! The ripple effects of low literacy are endless. They can affect relationships in ways we may not even think of. We are proud to provide adult literacy instruction to deserving adults in the Greater Richmond community to help them better express care for their loved ones.
